What shade number do I need for plasma cutting. The plasma cutter is a Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38 (Max 30 amps).

I would use a shade 5 with that machine.You need to see what you are cutting.I had a 29 amp 38 xl,and 5 is about right.I also have a 90 amp esab,and it is not enough really,but ok for short cuts.

Hi CM.
In my Thermal Dynamics Drag-Gun manual the following info. is supplied:

per ANSI/ASC Z49.1

For arc current less than 300A, minimum shade=8, suggested shade=9
For arc current 300-400A, mininum shade=9, suggested shade=12
For arc current 400-800A, minimum shade10, suggested shade=14.
