MIG Welder requirement

I'm considering purchasing a MIG welder suitable for welding 1/4 to 3/8" metal plate/tubing for the assembly of a back-hoe attachment.
What size unit do you recommend? What brands?

I have a Miller 210 machine that is rated for up to 3/8" in one pass at I believe a 60% duty cycle. They run about 1200 dollars. I found mine used in new shape and have been very happy with it, although it is a lot more machine than I really needed.

If you have more time than money and don't expect to be welding heavy material often and don't need a large/heavy welder in your way, you could do it with a 220 volt 175 amp machine, Lincoln SP175Plus comes to mind. You may need to make 2 or 3 passes for each joint and allow time to cool the machine running at 20 or 30 percent duty cycle at near max amperage. This can work Ok if you have the patience for it if not done real often.
Machines get faster, more expensive, larger and heavier from there.
