New Sand Blaster

I just bought a sand blaster from harbor freight. It is one of those small bench-top units. Everything looks to be of good quality. But the directions say to use only glass bead media. My question is why? And if I can use some other media what do you recommend? Is there a web site that explains all the different types of media? I will be blasting mostly steel and cast iron.

The recommendation for only glass bead media has to do with OSHA regulations and your health. The glass beads apparently are large enough that they cannot be inhaled, or at least will do less damage to your lungs if you inhale it. The glass bead media will for sure damage your wallet though.
Go to your local building center and ask for what some of them call blasting sand, or what used to be called silica sand. It does carry a warning label dealing with inhaling the dust, but if you wear a proper mask, there is nothing to worry about, and since yours is an enclosed system, even less to worry about. The silica sand does a great job.

Not sure why you have to use only glass beads. I have good luck with slag media (Black Beauty is one, about $10 for 100 pounds)in my sand blasting box. This is a fairly agressive media.

T.P.Tools seems to be a rebirth of the old TIP Co. under new ownership. The original owner retired a couple of years ago and another company took over sales of existing inventory. The building on the home page was built 10-15 years ago for expansion of the business. Someone has now established there with some of the same products and brands as before.
