I have a DC Airco welder/generator, Koeler gas engine, that stoped welding. Barley get a spark from stinger. Had a new "Excited Board" installed and it welded for 10 minutes and did the same thing. Took it back to Elect. Shop and they said I should buy another welder for what it would cost ot fix my old one. What do you all think. Sounds to me like they don't want to admit they charged me $200 and didn't fix it. Thanks for your advice!

Hi Ben,

You need to get a book on generators and learn how to check for winding resistance. They are correct as if you can not repair this unit yourself, it will be very cost prohibitive to have someone repair it.

And yes you are correct that if they did there job correct the unit would be fixed and would have not burned out another exciter board.

Find a service manual for a 50kw to 100kw generator unit as those units are worth repairing and will have all the information on troubleshooting and repair of generators that can be applied to any generator of any size.
