How much weight will a steel beam hold?

I'm building a hoist and I don't know how much weight the top H beam can carry, I have a 4X4" .250 web and a 6X6" .27 web as my options with a 10' span. I would like it to be able to pick up an auto engine, like a 454 chev. Would either of these beams be strong enough for a TD6 motor? Thanks for your help. You guys are the best I know for knowledge of this kind of stuff.

According to my book you want to use either a W4X13 or a W6X25 beam. I sat down with my notes and statics book and tried to come up with an answer. I can calculate the sum of the forces, the moments on the beam, the change in length due to temp change, stress, strain, center of gravity, centroid of inertia, column size, forces on the colums, footing size, and even right up a welding procedure for welding it together, but couldn't come up with the answer to your question. I'll check with my proff and see what I can come up with.

How do I engineer a job like the one in question? I would have already looked at one that was factory made and have the engineering already done in my mind. If I had your material and was building it...I would consider welding one beam on top of another if I thought it was a little light duty. Or...a truss brace on top of the heavier one. When I finished with the project I would test it with a load that was twice as much as I was ever gonna lift with it and let it set there with the weight on it for hours. Also, if it passed that test...I would get up on a ladder and sight down the length of it and look for any bow in it telling me that it is or is not safe. Then I would not tell a soul how I engineered it...you get my point? Seems to me that the beams have a term called kips that is used in rating how much they'll hold and it depends on how much side bracing and span that they have. I think a beam usually always twists before it fails. The guys that are engineers can tell you more about it...if they will. My type of engineering is what I call using good metal machining and welding skills and proper materials and a whole lot of common sense and experience. Still, some of the modern young engineers might frown at my methods...and their methods are usually better than mine. My type of engineering is usually over engineered...theirs is usually right on the money. They deserve respect for their knowledge and you should usually use their methods. Fred OH

I agree with what Billy NY posted. Being a licensed Structural Engineer myself, I have seen countless structural failures that were the result of backyard Engineering, some including fatalities. Don't get me wrong, I do not believe that every home/shop project requires a calculation that is sealed by a Professional Engineer. But at the same time, a monorail type design that requires heavy lifting should be evaluated by a competent Engineer. I have always Engineered structures with this in mind: "Life is fragile, design and build with care."

the 4in beams is a4x13lb per foot and 6x6id either a 15or 20 lb per foot , i cut these for a steel co in des moines and would say the 4inch beam would be ok for small engines but you would need a 6x6by25lb per foot for heavier motor

Steel members are denoted first by the shape, then web size ( in the case of I beams for this discussion ) then how many pounds per foot it weighs. Here's an example of a W shape ( I-beam): W x 10 x 25 = W shape ( according to the AISC manual ) - American Institute of Steel Construction, it has a 10" web & weighs 25 lbs. per foot, so multiply your length by 25 in this case, say 10'-0" & it weighs 250 pounds. To truly determine the acceptable liveloads for a member, you need to identify the span length & the maximum weight intended to be supported/suspended and location of the load, say center of span for example and also the weight of the member itself. This would be checked against the column size, or your existing supports, and or determine the column size needed to support the span, or determine what is necessary to beef up an existing structure to carry the load, depending on what you are doing. If you want to really know, it's best to pay a licensed professional engineer, preferably a structural engineer to run calculations on what you propose to do, figure 1 or 2 hours for the going rate for engineer to do the calc's for this if you give him all pertinent details of what you propose, keeping it simple, which will most likely include a safety factor of 4. It is well worth knowing exactly how much you can support or suspend from the span. I know it sounds like a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo and most people make good judgments as to what will hold what, by common sense, experience etc. to get it done, but all it takes is one failure to cause serious injury or death, thats why I would suggest using something that is engineered or having an engineer confirm your proposed arrangement, well worth a few $$ to do so in my humble opinion.

Remember the beam may hold . Better look at what is supporting this beam. How the support is attached to the beam. Look at your hoist, your trolley and your chains. Best if you have a friend, who is a qualified engineer have a look at it. Don't get hurt, that is a lot of weight to fall 10 to 12 feet to the floor and most likely you or others
are under it . If you are in the commercial business a standard I or H beams are not approved in most states.

I use a mobie home I-beam in my shop on a 20 foot spand and I've picked up a pick truck high enough to remove all 4 tires and it has never been a problem

We've got a 4x6 I beam on an A frame with a 12' span and have had more than the weight of a TD6 motor on it before with no problems. Either one of the beams you have ought to support what your wanting to pick up with no problem. In your situation with the choice of two different beams you might as well go with the heavier one since you already have it. Just like anything else that gets built you never know what you might want to do with it later on. It's always better to have a little bit extra when you need it later than to not have enough.
