Remove to bare metal, very light coat of zinc oxide primer, regular primer, Urethane & clear coat seems to be the way car repairs are dealt with. I go this route except that I do not use the urethane and clear coat instead after the regular primer I use an single aklyd finish coat as I am not equipped to handle urethane. A friend of my painted his restoration with an PPG epoxy primer which left him with a low gloss finish which he liked and has considered stopping at this point. I didn't mind this finish either and thought it would be one way to paint equipment that got rubbed, scratched, or knocked a lot. It would save a lot of time sanding if you wanted to keep the equipment looking good fairly good and keep ahead of the rust. Just keep going with primers where needed, paint would blend in faily well . I ran this by my local hardware guy and he says the epoxy primer is not long term durable if exposed. He thought the advantage of the epoxy primer was good protection as the restoration project was finished over a period of time. Also said that for example hardware store Urethane only has about 10% auctual urethane and that industrial cost at least twice but content was much better. I would appreciate what others have for paint solutions.

I painted my brush hog over 18 years ago with just PPG epoxy primer. It was DP something, I think DP 40 but I'm not sure anymore. First I sand blasted it than gave it a few coats of the epoxy primer, no top coat of color, and it sits outside always. No rust coming though anywhere on it yet.

Glad to get your response ED. My friend has put a lot of time in his restoration and it looks good. Also great to have an other option like the epoxy as a solution. My friend also told me that you can have the epoxy coloured.

Hi Ed,

I fully agree. I once painted a car cowling with 2 coats of PPG DP40 epoxy primer after sandblasting. It sat outside in the weather all the time for about 10 years without any topcoat and without any rust showing through.

Good stuff but expensive now. It is currently referred to as DP40LF; the LF signifying lead free. I am not sure if it is as good as the older leaded version. The 40 is the shade, which is grey-green. It is available in six different shades. I am now using PPG OMNI MP170 epoxy primer which is about a third the cost of the DPLF. I don't know if it is as good w/o a topcoat as the old DP40 as I have never tried it that way.
