homemade electromagnet

I need a electromagnet to clean up around my small scrapyard.Being both poor and cheap,I thought of making one from the fields of a 300 amp generator that has been scrapped. Anyone have any thoughts on why this wouldn,t work? If it energized properly,a heavy plate could be added on the bottomto protect the windings and a lift eye on top. Any help appreciated.

Carl...I helped put an electro magnet with grapples on a Link-Belt crane down the road at the local (I call it the mall...others call it a junkyard) neighbors place of business. It lifts about a ton and has a heck of a large generator (maybe 2 or 3 hundred pounds) mounted along side of the cranes Detroit diesel, great big electrical box and if I remember right...about 240 volts of DC to run it and welding cables to the magnet...and if I'm thinking right...it has a de-magnetize as you release the metal from the magnet. Don't know how a home-brew rig would work...might have to read all you can on the subject and go from there. Try the search engines on the puter if no one else has a brainstorm. Fred OH
