How do you fill a hydraulic jack?

After 30 years of service my 5T bottle jack won't pump over half the cylinder so I guess it needs oil. Should I use regular hydraulic oil or 30W non detergent. How do you add the oil. There is a screw plug about half way up the cylinder. I do not think there are any leaks or problems with the pump or cylinder, just a little leakage over many years.

I live up north and even though I use jack oil when it is very cold (zero or below) my jack doesn't work well. If I warm it up it goes all the way up. When I bought it the procedure on getting the air out of the cyl. was to leave the screw open and pump it a a bit then close the screw and it will go all the way up.Its a 8T jack and I keep in my pickup in case I have a flat as its easier to use than the screw jack that came with the truck. I haven't had a flat when its very cold so haven't had to deal with my choice of jacks under cold conditions.

All of the replys are right on. ONLY USE JACK OIL! It is 10wt non detergent antifoam. I have fixed several very nice and big jacks from flea markets with a little jack oil. I bought a 15 ton jack that wouldn"t go but a little ways up. A $8.oo deal and some oil ,NICE jack! You will also need to pump it all the way up and let it all the way down several times to get all of the air out of the system. You will hear it burp and gurgle as you push it down. Then with it all the way down check the oil level one more time. Jeff

I have one of these in my future. Just so I understand....I want the piston to be all the way retracted (jack lowered) and then I open the plug and fill it up with oil, right? Once it is full and the plug is in, it should work normally again unless there is another problem.

Do I have that right?

ScottR is correct but make sure the jack is upright and fill to the bottom of hole.

Well, don't do as I did and use ATF in the 4 ton porta power...it leaked all over the box and all over the contents and more. I finally found a funnel that had a 1/8" end on it...but you have to fill a jack laying down and can get too much in it. Use Bob's method...a clean pump type oil can and hydraulic jack oil with the jack standing up and you can't miss...(thanks Bob.) Fred OH

You can get hyd. jack oil at most hardware stores or the local auto parts store. Lower the piston all the way, remove the screw plug on the side, fill to the bottom of the hole, reinstall the plug and pump it up. If it still wont go up and there are no signs of leakage you have other problems. The pump seal or check valve may be bad, and you will have to take it apart.

Use HYDRAULIC JACK OIL only. Automotive parts places usually have it. A clean pump-type oil can works good to get the oil in the little hole. Put in only enough so the jack pumps up all the way.
