I have a Lincoln wire feed welder that I just bought a mig conversion kit for. Which gas do I need to use for auto body panels? The book says CO2 or argon-carbon dioxide. Thanks!

HI Larry

I prefer a 75/25 gas

The Co2 has a deeper straight line penatration, while the penatration on the 75/25 is not quite as deep, it has more of a flaring action like an inverted V. An also provides a wetter weld puddle [fluxing action], w/ less splatter.

Hi Larry,

I don't see a need for anything other than Co2. AR/Co2(20%) will cost aout $75/200cft where as Co2 about $45/200cft.

If you want to only fill one cylinder or own one cyl, then 100% AR is hard to beat for all around use for different metal types or Tig/Mig.

Thank you T-Bone,, that's just what I wanted to hear and especially from you. That is that 100% Argon is ok to use for Tig and Mig.. I have a Miller Dialarc HF with Tig and I bought a wire feeder to go with it. I have a bottle of Argon and everyone tells me I need a bottle of 70/30, or something like that. I didn't want to invest in another bottle of gas. So, I've been using flux core wire. But now since your advice is what I've been waiting to hear I will just use the Argon that I have.. Thanks T-Bone..

Hi Dick,

I should have included that you need to use the common filler metals when using pure AR, E-70s, 308, 309, etc;

Alot base metals and filler rods require mixed gas. Example Mig on castiron, 80/20 Ar/Co2 mix works best, or 316SS likes a tri-mix 70Ar/28He/2Co2.

Here is reprint of my thoughts on welding gases;

Pure Argon with Mig works well on light gauge SS SM as it gives lite penetration and reduces weld splatter. Argon adds arc stability with shallow penetration, lowers weld spatter and removes oxides at the weld surface.

Helium adds high thermal conductivity with-in the arc reducing it's density. Read this as a cheap(free) amperage increase. Increases penetration and flatens the weld bead contour.

As we move to heavier SS metals we can add 1% to 5%, o2 with the Argon that helps with undercutting and adding penetration for Mig welding. Adding more than 5% o2 would cause porosity with-in the weldment.

Qxygen in amounts upto 5% can be added for broading the penetration in the center of the weld bead, controls undercutting and helps improve arc stability.

Co2 can be added but has a spatter problem on most thin gauge metals and defeats my useage. O2 on the other hand enhances the tri-mix.

When Helium is added with Argon, 75%Ar/25%He the weld bead is broader and penetration is improved on SS.

Then we can add Co2 with Argon for a mix of 75%Ar/25%Co2. The Co2 is primarly added to reduce the cost of pure Argon. We can also use pure Co2 for some SS types but weld splatter is a big problem.

Now we get the best of all worlds and end up with a tri-mix of Argon/Helium/Co2. With this mix we get the flatest weld bead profile, good penetration and very little weld splatter on SS.

We also can use a heavy consentrate of Helium and add Ar, Co2 or o2 for Mig welding SS. What determines the cover gas, is the composistion of the filler wire and what the filler wire mfg spec's.

These cover gasses can also be used for welding other metals.

I use carbon-dioxide/argon mix in my Lincoln SP-100, works good for auto bodies.
