Kerosene - shelf life?

I have some kerosene that is at least four years old. Would that still be good in a Reddy heater?

I was wondering the same thing when I found a barrel with about 5 gallons of Kerosine and 5 gallons of water sitting behind the corn crib, been there at least 10 years. When the water froze , I poured off the kero and after letting whatever was in it settle out for a week ,I burned it in my salamander with no trouble. I did mix it about 50/50 with new fresh kero. Maybe it was just dumb luck, eh?

The older kero gets the more it stinks when it burns. Salamanders realy stink if they have poor combustion. Don't even think of putting it in a Kerosun or some type of wick heater! If it is a small amount use it to was parts in! A little more, say 20 gallons; run it through a fold of clean rag into a funnel and into your fuel oil heater tank. They are so close it shouldn't matter.

Need more info. What kind of container? Opened or unopened? Metal or plastic? Where stored? These things have as much to do with useable life as the passage of time. For example if you have 10 gallons of kero in a 55 gallon barrel, sitting in a tin barn in Texas, it might not be good in a few months. But, if you had a full, new, unopened 5 gallon can of kigh grade clear kero, stored in your shop, it might last for years and years.

Probably several years at least if it's in a tightly sealed container....
