I know I'll get an answer on this forum for sure with you tool tech guys. Seldom do I ever see an older water temp gauge that is in working condition. Oil pressure and ammeters seem to work forever, but not so with the water temp gauge. I understand the mechanical principal on how and why they work (air expansion in the sensor/tube/gauge coil) but I am at a loss to know what happens to this setup over time that it packs it in. Anybody know? Also, can they be repaired? I've got quite a collection of nice old gauges but they aren't of much use. Thanks.

My guess is the sensor tube is made the same as the sensor in a thermostat. They eventually can't take anymore heating and cooling and just fatigue out and call it quits.

The short and general answer is they leak.

The air(or fluid) tight connection between the sensing probe and the tube that is connected to the gears on the pointer has sprung a leak and it does the same thing as cutting the wire on electricasl operated ones. The expansion of fluid or air in the probe is being vented to the outside and doesn't move the tube at the indicater. Use them for decorations as they are a pain to try and find the leak and restore the fluid or air and reseal them.It would be hard to find a vacuum chamber you could use to test some of them.
