To All & Steve too:

My TIG Stainless Steel welding has never been the greatest. Looks ok on the top with the shielding gas but the undersides show carbonization from to much heat being put into the piece. Yes I know move faster but I still just cant seem to get it right. The other day I saw this Stainless Steel back-up flux at the Tin Man web site. My question is: Has anyone ever used a flux on Stainless Steel instead of going to the trouble of using a shielding gas on the backside of the work piece?

Thanks in advanced,

James Nichols

Hello James,
You can buy flux cored TIG rod. All it really amounts to is a cored wire for MIG continous electrode that's been cut to length. You can also get back up strips.

Thanks Steve:

Flux cored TIG rod? I've got tons of questions on that!

For now though what I'm talking about looks like a paste that you paint on the back of your project before you start to weld. The argon gas keeps the air away from the front of the weld while the paste keeps air from the back. The paste will allow the metal to cool without air contact. This would let you weld without having to a backing tunnel full of argon gas on the backside of the weld while it cools. Try the URL below, I hope it works.

Thanks again,

James Nichols

That's what the back-up strips are for as well. They negate the need for a gas purge. I've got a pretty tough travel schedule next week. Meetings with spray shop owners in the windy. Somewhere in there I'll dig up some info on the strips and e-mail you.
