Refilling Ox/Acet Tanks

I am looking at buying a used oxygen/acetelyene burning outfit. How do you know if you will be able to get the tanks refilled (ie condition,whether they had been stolen, etc.) Thanks for your response.

One of my mig bottles has a smooth collar below the threads. Another is embossed "CUSTOMER OWNED" on the collar. My small oxygen bottle has "SOLD" in 3/8" letters stamped on the shoulder. My acet bottle has no collar and no company marking anywhere. A 5' tall oxy bottle has a company name embossed on the collar. The co. is out of business for quite a few years, believed to have been bought out. My local supplier said he will fill it since the name is no longer in use, and he doesn't know where to return it anyway. I don't remember what it cost, if anything, and it's still full. The two mig bottles were obtained by trading in two other bottles from flea markets. I think one was used to fill ballons.
I paid about $10-15 each for them and was allowed $65-$70 each on the mig bottles. Look for large bottles that are unmarked and uncommon to use for trade-in. Be sure to ask the dealer first if he accepts a trade-in.
Also make sure the bottles are not past hydro test date or you will pay for that, too. I think a star is 10 years from the marked date, and a "+" is an additional 5 years.

Hi Twin Creek,

From what I was told here it the name of the cylinder owner on the top of the cylinder collar imbossed in the steel as that would be a leased or rental cylinder.

If smooth or no name then there a private owner cylinder. You need to check with your local gas supplier as this might change in different locations.

I bought a complete torch/set at a farm sale. Tanks were only 1 year old,but when I went to get them filled the company did not recognize the bill of sale from the auction company. They wanted the original bill of sale from the original purchaser.I had to lease a new set of bottles.

Company we do business with charges rent on the bottles. Something like $1 a month. When you need them filled, call, they pick them up and exchange them and charge you for the gas. We have now purchaed bottles from a friend, no questions were asked by the company. They tested all the bottles, replaced valves as needed and refilled them all. Now, we have a stock pile of bottles. Never heard of them asking about stolen bottles. Maybe I'm just not from the big city.

Look on the oxygen bottle and there should be dates. These indicate when the bottle was static tested. In NM its every 4 years. When you buy bottles out right they have a plain collar band on top and usally on a company bottle it will have the gas company`s name on it. The acetelyene might give you trouble. Hopefully it has the new style valve in it and not the old. Also they will probably want to do a acetone test on it if it has the old style valve. In the long run you would be better off leaseing a set. Its a couple of bucks up front but you`ll get it back if and when you terminate your lease. Good luck RT

Hello! Where I live out side of Portales, I rent my bottles for $40 each per year. thats $80 dollars per year and when I run out I take them to my supplier and pay for refilled ones. nobody around here will fill bottles unless you rent them from them. I know people that take their bottles to a place in texas and just exchange them for refilled ones,no questions asked. But I like the convenience of just taking them to town.

check with local supplier. if they will swap them out for full ones fine if not leave them be. bought a set like that once and could not get them filled when they were emoty. was about ot bit ethe bullet and buy a set when a different company opened in town. they were same company as tanks. went to them and asked about tanks and they were real nice. been swappign out there for several years now. once you swap you should never have a problem again. just always keep your last ticket when you swap in case you have to go somewhere else.

My bottles have SOLD stamped on them, so the gas co should not care whose they are since they cannot be theirs. This policy seems to work ok. I guess we will soon have to present a title for our vehicles to prove they are not stolen when we fill then up.

Well I go through this all the time with my tanks. My dad knew a guy that owned a gas company. I wanted to buy/rent tanks and his friend said I will just give you a set. When they were empty he would send a truck and replace them for free. This was great till he sold out. Now I have a set of tanks and no recite. If I try to take them some where to exchange for full tanks they want a sales recite to make sure they are not stolen. (contractors often leave tanks out in the open on job sites) I have been lucky and found a gas supplyer 60 miles from my house that will exchange them and this is OK since I use so little gas.
THE POINT IS Do not get a set of tanks that you do not have a sales recite from a gas company. If the owner has this recite and then will give you a transfer recite that should work. Best bet is to talk to the gas supplyer before you buy them and ask what their advise is and if they will exchange them.

I believe laws, rules, and regulations vary on this depending on where you are at. It seems to me that you either buy or put a deposit down on your first bottles. Our local coop handles refillable bottles. You take your empty's there and you can exchange them for full ones. You just pay for the oxygen/acetelyene in them. You never get the same bottles back. You just more less exchange out the bottles. They will not let you transport or exchange a bottle without a cap. That is the situation where I am at. I believe at one time you had to own your own bottle and send it off to get refilled and you would get the same bottle returned back. Now the refill company has all of its own bottles and I'm not sure if you quote unquote buy the bottles (that way you legitamently own the bottles in your possession) or just put a deposit down. Could be different where you are at too.

I would ask for the s/n off the tanks and have your potential supplier identify if they are private or gas company tanks.

I lost some tanks about 2 yrs. ago. Supplier said they were there tanks and I did not original sales slip where warehouse had bought them. Chased this for awhile and gave up. I now use a rented tank for Acetelyne.

I would also ask if the tanks need to be inspected. I have heard of expired tanks being confiscated (unsafe per supplier) and forcing owner to rent new tanks.

Just go in with your eyes wide open - see post below about incomplete refills. I guess immediate profit margin is more important than return customers. As the saying goes - "Word of mouth is the best advertisement."

Best to ask the person you are buying them from if they mind if You take them to your local supplier to see if they will fill/exchange them. If they are somehow marked as to the supplier that will help. Each supplier has their own fill/exchange policies. Years ago I bought my own tanks with the understanding that the supplier could refuse to fill/exchange them if I did not have original sales agreement.I have never had a problem but could see where it may be a problem if I sold them to someone without the agreement.
