Tape measure refills

Had my 25' tape measure extended and it got kinked and broke. I cannot find a replacement tape refill. The clerks at two stores told me the refills are no longer made, just have to buy new complete tape. I wonder if this is just a way for the stores to stock fewer items and sell the more expensive new tapes. Have the refills disappeared in your area?

My dad broke a starrett tape measure blade a while back. He went looking for the replacement blades and they were nearly the price of the entire tape. He went to the hardware store, bought a cheap stanley (entire tape) for a few bucks, pulled the blade out and put it into the starrett. Naturally the stanley blade isn't the same quality as the starrett, but it is an affordable fix and it fits.

Save the pieces and buy another tape of the same width. Every so often, the spring portion will break first, then you can use the tape portion to fix the first one. Might need to regrind the spring tang to fit the new tape.

I have a couple here also. The last time I went to buy refill it was 1.00 less than complete new tape. They are not worth messing with anymore from what I found out.

I used to fret about them things and have kept broken ones for the tape or spring. Now you can get a usable one for $5 so it isn't worth messing with. I try to keep a few extras because of breakage, lost,or just wind up in someone elses toolbelt.Usually get the guy at the lumber yard to toss in at least one for free with each order.

I have always bought my tapes at Sears as they just give you a new one. I recently took back a 50 ft tape to Sears that my Dad bought back in the 60's. The salesperson said no problem, in fact I got a 100' instead of the 50' for only $4 more. Make sure you get their Crafsman brand.

Now this does frost me. Sears is great for tools and I take something back MAYBE once a year. A 1/4 drive ratchet broke. No problem and here you are. Now I was standing in line to get a little lamp socked when in comes about six MEX--ANS who do dry wall. They go to the counter and exchange one or two tape measures each. Everyone of these had the end hook broken off on purpose. After they left I asked the manager about this deal. "They come in every week and get new ones. There boss told them to do it so they have nice clean tapes for next week." He gets BULK tapes from Sears in a box with no package so he can keep slime like this in tapes. TOO MANY stores have this same policy . No questions asked. It just makes me SICK!
