I have read all the problems in below post,and have even experienced some myself with the neighbors dogs. Now how do I keep my dog put ?? We just have a small dog 30-40lb Blue Healer keep her outside with a stake and a chain so I can move to a new spot around yard.I started with a store bought metal stake 16in long ? with a dome on top and a swivel worked decent until this year lots of rain she keep pulling it out,went to a home made one 3ft long pulley on top for swivel chain would tangle also put on a heavy regular link 1/4inch chain she ties it in knots and also pulled out the 3ft rebar stake.Very talented ! Once in the morning she even had it moved to another spot and stuck back in the ground,this puzzled us for a long long time as we asked the close neighbors and none knew anything ? My daughter was selling girl scout cookies this year and finally found out who put the stake back in a neighbor 1/2 mile away !Any good suggestions as to keeping them put ??She keeps pulling out stakes and breaking hardware then runs off and gets tangled up somewhere.

I have a 100ls. lab that use to get out and run. I tryed one of the under-ground fences but she got wise to it and after 6 months she would hang her head rael low and walk real slow and still get out. I replaced it with a electric (cow) fence with the push in posts. Works great, even keeps out the other dog around.

I have a 6 ft. privacy fence around my back yard, and one of the two female lab pups we got, kept finding a way out---either by digging, chewing, etc., and the other pup would follow. I restrung the hot wire about 8" off the ground all the way around the fence, and they won't go anywhere near the fence anymore. It really doesn't hurt them, and they can run all over the yard.....
I don't like to see dogs tied up----personal preference, I guess.

I put up a fence to keep my dog in. Then we got a second dog and he was like a little Hairy Houdini, wasn't no fence that could keep him in. If he couldn't climb over, he'd tunnel under. He wasn't a bad or vicious dog, just really freedom-loving. Finally gave him away so he's someone else's problem now.

Get an "invisible fence " a wire buried underground with a transmitter to a shock collar on the dog they learn immediately and do not have to be staked out. Man, I hate to see a good dog like a healer on a chain they need to be able to move around. Get the fence at Lowes. I paid a professional to install mine and found he uses the same one as Lowes which would cost much less. They really work. THere are some dogs that don't get the picture so you might want to lay the wire on the ground before you bury it and if it doesn't work carefully wrap it back up in the box and take it back.

I put a rope up between the barn and the house, a pulley runs on the rope with the dogs 25' leash attached to it.....The dog can go from the back door of house, into his dog house, down off the deck across the yard driveway. You may have to put a stopper on his run so he dosent get himself tangled at one end of his run...Gives him quite a bit of room to run and depending on weather he can sleep in the dog house, driveway lawn, etc... Relatively cheap and very effective....You could also use a sturdy tree, but be sure to put the stopper short of tree so doggy dosent get tangled up...

That's a dog that needs something to do, not to simply be chained in place.

Use a fence. That way the dog has a distinct visible boundry that they both understand, and will treat as their own. A chain doesn't give this and makes the dog uncertain of their terrority, and often results in a strange acting dog.

Lastly, consider getting rid of the dog. It may not be the type for you.

I have a fenced in yard, 40 X 80, for my Aussie and she never gets out, unless I don't latch the gate well enough. The couple of times she got out she went and sat at the front door waiting for me to come home. But, a neighbor has an underground wire and collar for her dogs and it works really well. You can also get a runner that attaches to two trees and the dog can run the length of the cable.

I once had an escape artist that would get loose every night, until I fitted him with a choker chain and a nylon collar. I ran the end of the choker chain through the D ring on the nylon collar and then used a screw type chain link to attach it to the runner chain. That stopped the morning dog hunts, when he tryed to pull against the choker chain at first he would collapse from lack of air. He soon learned the new rules. That was before the invisible fences, now I would buy one first. My neighbor uses one for his basset hound, and the only time it escaped the fence had lost power. I know of a guy that has a 10 acre field invisible fenced for his dogs.

Not to be a smart a$$ here but, I have had Blue Healers. Alot of my freinds have them also. They need a job. They need to heard cattle/sheep/pigs. Around these parts a good healer will bring big bucks. They are a working dog not a pet.

I totally agree with you. This dog would be better on a farm. Come by some night and take her that way the wife and kids think she ran off again. Better at a good home than dead on the road.

One thing that will help agianst the dog breaking the lead, and pulling the stake out is a spring. One thing it's doing is lunging at the line. The spring will give and not the anchor.....I'm sure the dog doesn't have enough brute strength to pull the big stake. Look at the local pet supply place...you should find one there.

Mike, Before I finally got my place fenced in I two have healers. I spent a couple of bucks and put in the invisable fence. Worked real good. Healers are to hyper to have chained. When mine were young they would wear you out with the ball. You know I still might have the collars out in the barn if I do I`ll send them to you. You`ll just have to buy the wire. RT

My sister had a pair of black lab pups. From the start one was 100% trouble. Had to keep that one tied or the 2 would be into something. They had a donkey buddy about 2 miles away and that is where they would usually end up. Pulled the stake out and then the stake and the 50 lbs of concrete that had been added to it. Let it loose for a few minutes and off he 2 would go. Almost wiped out all neighbors chickens. One day the dog got over the fence but hadn't got the concrete blockover-yet. That dog went to the pound but it should have been put away as I a sure it would always be trouble. Now the other one will not leave the yard on its own even though it is not tied.

Mike I've got two big dumb goofy mutts and they are escape artists also. I fenced my back yard however a neighbor dog came over wanting to play and bent the 4 ft fence down thereby teaching mine how to get out. When mine do escape they are totally harmless and if some big manly jerk was to attempt to shoot them for crossing his yard he would find the law so far up his but he could'nt squeak. Bring me proof that they harassed your livestock and I will take care of them myself. Anyway they are my dogs and they donot belong off my property so I ran a couple of electric strand around the yard. They touched it maybee twice now they won't come within 2 ft up it even for a juicy steak.

You have some very valid points, however you must not live out in the country. I have returned neighbors dogs on several occasions.I don't have to but prefer to treat all fairly. If they are in my fence with my stock they are mine and I do with them what I want. The strays that I can't identify get hot lead injections. Van

I have to agree with you on that. One of the neighbors had some kind of boxer rotwiler mix. She would run the heffers once a week or so. She next had two pups--- She taught then how to run heffers too. One nice sunny summer afternoon they got caught up with an 8mm semiauto. No more trouble with the dogs. The neighbor never found out where his puppys went either! I don't want to hear from any bleedin hearts either. I have always had pets and I always take good care of them and they NEVER bother any neighbor, PERIOD! This guy had been told MANY times about these muts and time just ran out.
Now for a bit nicer side to the story. My dad bought the invisible fence for his goofy mut that went to see all of the neighbors. I was at Lowes today and they have a new type of dog collar wireless deal that you DO NOT need to install an under ground wire. It makes a 1/2 acher circle around the transmitter. About $180 for the whole deal.
