Ok, I'll admit it when I'm beat :-). I have a broken cast iron exhaust elbow on a Case DB 1410. The piece is T shaped with the stem of the T going into the turbocharger, 1 arm of the T bolts to the exhaust manifold and one extends up to connect to the exhaust pipe. The upper side of the T is burned through and the top am broken off. There is insufficient metal remaining (due to burnout) in the exhaust arm of the T. I have attempted to weld a piece of 2" steel water pipe to the casting and can not keep the weld from breaking. So far I've tried, 6011, 6013 7014, 308 stainless, and nickle/manganese without success. Any ideas, the part is unavailable new and I have been unsucessful finding a salvage piece.

It might be worth your while to try 7018 rod. It will weld to cast real well but if the trick is to not get the cast real hot and then let it cool too quick. Cool it real slow, if you can put the whole weld into a bucket of sand(which holds the heat in and lets it cool slow)this relieves the stress alot. Good luck.

kyhayman, If it is burned that bad , arc weld is
most likely hopeless. A torch , some cast iron
rod ( cast iron in stick form ), and a can of flux. Take a look at some of these repairs. >Link
