I was looking at gun safes today, I will buy one after I get the tax refund. Questions, How good are the Homak brand, it is Made in the USA and looks good, but not fireproof, ($200) for double safe. The fire proof ones are $500 and up these are the Redman and Brownings are even more. Do you guys think that the Homaks are good or not, do you know anybody that has one?

If so here is a site that has some plans for sale. I have not had the time yet but did make provisions in the new house to build and install one.

Just another option

I have one of the 8 gun homaks. Not really a safe but a decent security cabinet. Especially compared to a glass front cabinet. I bolted it to the concrete floor and the stud wall in the basement. Any reasonably hard working thief could get into it if he really wanted but the casual grab and runner will leave it alone. I bought it when I started having children and had guns in every closet of the house. The capacity is a stretch but I did fit 8 long guns and 2 hand guns in it along with three extra barrels, but it's really tight.

I've a Homak that I bought when we adopted our son (he's closing in on 7 now -- where do the years go). It won't stop someone who's determined and has time. However, it will keep my son from handling them without supervision (at least until he's older anyway).

Rick,

You might want to look at the Sentry safes. I got one about two years ago and have been happy with it. Mine has a combination lock which I like better than a key since I would lose the key for sure. I wrote the combination down in several spots so I don't lose that too. I didn't buy the fireproof one because of cost. My Sentry safe has the enamel finish and is very nice looking. I attached it to the wall studs from the inside of the safe. It is in a closet so you cannot pry it out from the side. I suppose a very determined guy could bust out the wall to get at it, but if he wants them that bad, he can have them!
I looked at the cheap Homart ones and couldn't bring myself to buying one like that - a metal cabinet really. The Sentry safe is much nicer and more substantial.
One thing to keep in mind. When you look at them, hopefully the store also sells guns. If it is advertised as a "12" gun cabinet, take 6 long barrel shotguns and 6 different kinds of rifles (some with scopes) and see if you can get more than 6 or eight of them in the darn thing. I doubt you will be able get the advertised number of "real" guns in there. I know where you are coming from with the 4 year old. My son is 12 and I trust him, but I do not know if I can trust his friends - it only takes a few seconds for an idiot to tragically change some lives forever.

The Homaks are junk. As far as the fireproofing goes I have a 2X rated Liberty and I thought I was safe and it would save my stuff in the event of a fire. Has a fire warrenty with it. I have a friend who had a fire and his Liberty was in the house, the house burnt to the ground. Upon opening his guns were burnt and the fire damaged all of the recievers too, nothing left. He went back to Liberty and filed a claim for his loss and the best they would do for him is sell him a new one at cost. I think the only way to fire proof one would be to install it in a area that if your house burned down it would not get too hot. Would have to install it by a outside wall. I thought about plumbing mine for water and in the event of a fire I would turn it one and flood the compartment, they would get wet, but not burned that way as I think the water would keep them cool.

Rick, I would highly recommend Liberty Safes. I have several, my brother has one, 2 good friends have them and know of several others. I got my first one in 1988, I think. The primary reason for me is fire and Liberty is hands down in my opinion. They are good for 60+ minutes at 1200 degrees, the average house fire is no where near that temp. Although I don't know anyone who has been involved in a fire with a Liberty Safe, I have seen there tests and I am trusting them. There is no way even 10 guys could carry a loaded safe- it took 6 to to move it empty. I would try to put it on a concrete floor, on carpet is ok, be careful in unheated areas due to moisture. Your imortant documents, pictures, and guns will absorb moisture. They have a little canister that you can put in, looks like an oil filter to help. Liberty has 4 or 5 different lines, finish/paint etc. I go with the Lincoln series, which is in the middle. Many options for the inside setup, paperwork, handguns, longguns, etc. You can expect to pay $1000 - $2500, depending on size, grade, and fire rating. Also, don't have any safes delivered. I don't trust those delivery guys. Good luck.

If the purpose is simply to keep your kid out of harm, the cheap ones you can get at Walmart or Dicks for $80 will do you just fine. Beware of where you leave the key!

Rick; Years ago my Uncle told me, that to put all your gun's in a "gun safe", was doing the robber a favor, he didn't have to look for them, there they were all togeather for the takeing! Most of the ones I have looked at, it would be a easy job to get in to, you get what you pay for.

I need the safe to keep guns out of the hands of my 4 year old boy. And a safe really only keeps the honest person away. If you really had the time and strength you could haul away a safe and/or crack the locks with drill bits.

I have recent personal experience with gun safes, 2 Cannon and a McWelco, all lost in a fire here in So. Cal. All 3 had to be cracked by a professional safe cracker (not a walk in the park) and the contents were entirely destroyed. The Homak I have seen is a security cabinet and not a true safe. The safe cracker advised against a fire-resistant safe as a waste of money. Since that time I have talked to a person with a T 32 safe (high fire rating and expensive) with a coin collection which was also lost in the same fire.
One person in the safe business suggested building an alcove with fire-code drywall and enclosing the safe(s), which is what I will do in the future. Good luck, Pete

Get a large fire resistant safe. Put the unreplaceable family photos, jewelery etc in there too.

Rick: If you are not fireproof concerned, the homart? Brand you speak of will do fine. You can bolt them to the floor if you like. Else a couple strong backs and enough time, it could be hauled off intact. I think the locks are plenty good, would take a lot of prying to ever get access to the material inside. I dont think the keys can be just duplicated either, keep the key number in a safe place as the factory can replace them,if needed. But they are a little expensive. I got one as the others you mention are a little high for my billfold. Seems I saw a web site for them one time or another. I keep a bag of silica water/moisture deterent in mine.

My brother lost an expensive Browning fireproof safe in a den fire at His house. Had to call a safecracker to open it, He had templates as to where to drill and knock out the bars. Once the bars were knocked in the door opened to show everything was destroyed. This was a 900lb safe and supposed to be a good one.
