Miller Spectrum 375 Electrical Question

I am looking to purchase a Miller Spectrum 375 plasma cutter and I am a little confused by the electrical requirements. The specs say that it can run on either 120v or 240v. It doesn't have any details on what the default setup is and how you go about changing it to the other. I've talked to a couple of different people at different retailers and I'm not getting a consistant answer to this question.

The answer that I seem to be getting is that it comes with a 120v plug (amperage of this plug isn't clear, but it sounds like 20 amp to me) and to convert it, you have to cut the cord and install a 240v plug. One guy says that the voltage difference only makes a slight difference in the quality of the cut, while another says that I definately want to go 240v if I want to meet the specified cut capacity of the machine.

Can anyone here help clarify this matter?

What Jerry said is correct. To get the full cut capacity of the machine requires 28 amps on 115 volts, so is not practical. For the thicker stuff, you need 230 volts, only requires 14 amps at maximum. You can build a pigtail adapter like he mentioned pretty cheap. I use mine on 115 for most stuff, can plug into any of the 20 amp plugs in my shop. I have a dedicated 230 volt extension cord for it when I need to cut bigger material.

if your buying from a dealer he should have pointed out that there is a toggle switch in the machine that switches voltage. You have to reach in a slot with a screw driver to flip it.(at least thats the way my spectrum 300 is) As far as the 120 cord goes, just make you up a little pigtail that can plug into your 240 recep on one end and onto the 120 plug on the other. 240 will cut a little better, but the big advantage is duty cycle improves a lot with 240 vs 120.
