Any of you ever get a project going and tell yourself that if you just had this particular tool of piece of equipment that things would be so much easier only to find out that after the project is over that this is the tool or piece of equipment that either gets in the way all the time or that your friends and neighbors got to be borrowing it all the time. A few of mine have been: Tiller and no garden.Engine stand for one engine,Shop crane for one engine job, 2 wheel tow dollie for one tow job.!0'utility trailer for 1 200 mile trip. I had a check out list on that shop crane because it was so popular and that tiller was gone 6 months once and I didnt know who had it. Anyway do you have any of these types of tools?

yeah, I got plenty of them things. I used to borrow the neighbors MAC eager beaver 2.0 chainsaw to trim my trees, I always brought it bak with gas in it, a sharp chain, and everything it had when I started plus a well tuned carb. My grandfather used to have a sign that had the best saying in the world: "The guy who loans tools lives on wyomissing street."my neighbor that I used to borrow the saw from is probably the only guy I ever loan anything to mainly because I have seen how intelligent he is and he doesnt have every tool in the world abd sometimes needs to borrow a hand or a bigger saw to cut those larger deader trees up with. I generally make sure that I return a tool in either the same condition or better than when the owner of it loaned it out to me. I always have a job to do so I need my saws for them, but if I have to borrow a saw, I make sure I return it with a sharp chain, full tank of oil and gas, good drive sprocket, and most important of all a happy owner.

Well heck, any tool not in use is in the way. The bigger the tool, the more it's in the way.

The kinda embarassing ones are the ones you just had to have, but still haven't used.

Well I'm guilty of being the borower a lot. Bought a farm a few years ago and its a bit too far to borrow everthing from Dad. In time I am accumulating stuff, but often I will go to one of my neighbors for a tool or help. I have a great bunch of folks around me who always do what they can to help. The key I have found is to always return the tool, tractor whatever in better shape than when I picked it up, and be avaliable to give them a hand when they need it. Grant

I put a wood stove in my cellar about 12 years ago.Needed an odd-ball length of 6 in. stove pipe to complete my job.I bought a pair of those pliers to crimp the pipe so the next piece will fit over it.Hid the pliers so I would know right where they were for next time.Last year, the odd ball piece rotted out.I hid the pliers so well that I couldn't find them.Had to pay the guy in the hardware store 2 bucks to crimp the pipe.Still haven't found the pliers.

I only loan tools to guys that own tools themselves. My theory is that nobody has everything they will
ever need. Occasionally we all need to borrow,
but experience has shown if they have tools, they
respect tools. Those that have none don't respect
them.

Many years ago, like 40, i loaned out a small body grinder. Before the "friend" came to get it, i plugged it in and made sure it worked. Well, he took it home--i had to call for 3 weeks to get it back! I asked him if it still worked--"Oh, sure!" he said. Well, next time i turned it on, the grinding discs promptly came loose and flew across the garage! It did it 3-4 times!
So, i called him and asked what happened to my grinder--did he have trouble with it? "Oh, no, it was just like when i picked it up!" Well, somebody had it apart, because it was turning backwards! Thats why the discs flew off!I guess when they put it back together, they got it wired up backwards! I couldn't get any satisfaction from him, but he never got to borrow anything of mine again! There was one other friend that i would loan things to, and he to me, but i trusted him! Oh, he borrowed my Ford spring spreader, and had it for 20 years! But, he used it more than me. Rusty Jones

Some time back, I loaned a good friend some very expensive wood-working tools. I wasn't going to use them for awhile because I needed a year to recover from some heavy duty surgery. Before my friend could finish building his grandfather clock, he passed away. Well, I had to go to his estate sale and buy-back my tools. I didn't have any papers to show that I was loaning the tools out, and, the attorny for his estate claimed that my tools were part of my friend's estate.

My favorite tool that fits this category, though a lot cheaper, is one of those funky little wrenches that us used to reach up under the bathroom sink to loosen/tighten the water line to the faucet assembly. I bought it probably twenty years ago and used it one time. (A few years back I bought a box of tools at an auction and now I have two wrenches.) Since I, too, hate plumbing, I'd rather have this tool and never use it than to need it and not have the tool!

I have 3 of those sink wrenches. each has been used one time. i bought the first one during a remodel of my kitchen. bought the second one during my bathroom remodel because i couldn't find the first one. i bought the third one during a plumbing emergency because i couldn't find the other two. of course, no that i have no use for them, i have found them all, and they are all hanging on the wall. of course, next time i need one, they will all be missing

Kirk, you got the right idea there. I got tools I have never used, even specialty tools. Used one time. When I bought them I thought I really needed it or them. I used to be a real tool junkie, fixed about everything. Father time took care of that for me. I got the tools now, but I cant use them much. Son has no use for them as he has more than I do. But in a way they still give me a sort of sense of security. I still have guys that come around and say, ya got this? Ya got that. or I knew you would have it.

Have one neighbor that can tear up a ball bearing in a sandbox, every time he would borrow something he would bring it back dirty or beat. My tools help me make a living and I depend on them, last time he brought something back beat up we had words, dont see much of him any more, oh well, my tools are safer now.

Van,
Had an old timer as a customer in the power equip shop I worked at in back in the 70's. He must have been pushing 80 but still ran his own sawmill. I was sent over to his place to pick up some chainsaws for service. I got the three saws in the truck and then asked him about another saw sitting by the door. "Leave that one there, that's my lending out saw". He went on to explain that when anyone came around to borrow a saw he would give them that saw. Apparently it hadn't run in years but when it was returned no one ever said a word about it. No one ever fixed it for him either. LOL

Oh no, he borrowed a new air board sander and checked the handle up in a vise to change paper. handle is chipped and has a neat little diamond pattern on it now. Borrowed a compound power miter and ran all over the country on gravel with it on a flatbed loose before bringing it back to me and I live a half mile away. When I transport it, goes on the seat of my truck, not loose going from side to side on a steel flatbed for 25 miles. I was not amused.

Seems like people either really take care of things or beat the heck out of them. I've got one friend who used to borrow a bunch of my stuff, not any more. Borrowed a trailer to haul off aluminum siding, came back with staples, aluminum strips and a tire with a slow leak, didn't even clean it out when done. Also borrowed my pressure washer, came back beat up. Other type of person is a neighbor that moved in up the road. I have a small disk that he saw sitting outside. He had just plowed up a couple of acres and wanted to borrow it. I had just bought the disk, it needed a little work, but I told him go ahead. He brought it back with new grease fittings in place of the broken ones I was going to fix. Told him I had a couple of other things I had that needed fixing, he was welcome to them anytime. I don't like to borrow anything, if I really need to, whatever I borrow is returned to the owner cleaned up and often with a six pack of beer.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you about the tools. I spent most of my earlier years on the farm in a situation where it was easy to borrow money and buy the tractor, combine, land, or what ever but I never seemed to have the money to buy the small things like drills, wrenches , spare parts, etc. etc. Looking back, I see that that was a mistake on my part, and it cost me a lot of wasted money and effort making do with what I had. Now days I buy that small item and because I have it, things go much more efficient. I usually have one cordless drill to drill a hole and another to drive in the screw. I have the power sander so I do the woodworking I never bothered with. I have all the new cordless tools, spare parts I believe I will need, every screw size I can imagine, special wrenches, etc. etc. Each tool on it's own probably can't justify itself but when you look at the overall effect of being properly equipped the payoff does. I get a lot more done, especially maintenance. My garden tiller has turned me into a gardener, something I enjoy, especially those tomatoes. I don't believe I would have the garden if I had not bought that tiller. I have noticed that something may sit for a while but eventually it is needed and I'm glad I had it.

Usedta have them problems till I started requiring a damage deposit. Bought one of them high pressure hot water washers, (stanley steamers) would take it to peoples places and clean up tractors, balers, combines and what have ya, made some extra cash with it. One neighbor came over and wanted to know what I'd charge him to wash his tractor. What size ya got? It was one of them humongus mm, told him $75.00 all way round clean. Thats kinda hi, could I borrow that thing? NO, I don't loan things anymore. Same neighbor came back last summer wanting to know if I still had a square baler? Yeah it's over at the other place. I got my wheat cut today sure would be handy to have some square bales of straw this winter, could I borrow yer baler? NO, I don't loan my equipment, but I will hook onto it and bale yer straw for 35 cents a bale. thats kinda hi, guess I'll just big bale it.

I have a JD compact diesel and a Woods backhoe. For the first couple of years I had it, I did a pretty brisk business with small landscaping jobs that the big guys didn't want, or couldn't get their equipment in to do.

Had a feller call me, wanted me to dig out around part of his foundation so he could backfill with better dirt to make a flowerbed. Loaded up my new tractor/loader/backhoe on my new trailer behind my two year old truck and went over. As I was unloading, he enquired as to the price. "$35 an hour," sez I, "with a one hour minimum to cover my time loading, unloading and transporting"

He got UGLY with me over that. "It's only gonna take ya 15 minutes, I'll give ya $10, that comes to $40 an hour!"

"Yup," sez I as I'm loading my tractor back onto the trailer, "and a new shovel'll cost ya $20. Have fun..." and I drove off.

You're hired. I'll make sure to plant some wheat or barley this fall. The bales will easily bring $3.00 so I'll have a nice tidy profit. Will also give you a nice tip for timely baling.

Hm, guess I'd better go heavy on the nitrogen.
