Wife wants one of these big wooden play structures/swing sets for the kids.

Noticed some of these pre-cut, pre_drilled kits, made by Hedstrom, and some others. Seems like it would save a lot of time going with this method.

Anyone have any opinions on these pre-cut kits vs. building one from scratch?

Have to get this project done before I can work on my new shop, so time is definately important.

My wife wanted one of those and I asked her how good she was at digging out splinters ? I had a welder friend build one out of pipe. These are the best heavy enough to stay put when swinging , no splinters,last several lifetimes. Or build the shop and hang a swing in there ?

I like the idea of the swing in the shop. Maybe I could also put a "fort" up in the attic?

Have you checked out Lowe's ?? The Lowes store near me has a planning guide available and sells all of the parts separately as well as in kits. You can buy the basic kit and add whatever extras you would like or go full custom.

I got one of the Hedstrom sets 2 years ago for my youngun, good swingset, all the parts there and the holes where they are supposed to be. I'm a pretty good mechanic but it was a challenge. Plus I had plenty of little hands helping me. Took me about 2 days, 4 hrs at a time, to do.

Kids sure are spoiled now a days. I would have had to help dad build the shop and been proud to do it. But of course that is how I learned how to do things.

Naaah, hang a tire from a tree limb and turn em loose on it. Get after that shop, gotta prioritize here.

Matt I was also thinking of what you said. we chose to buy a rainbow Play Systems unit it was expensive but worth the money. The unit is red wood aand heavy ,my daughters will enjoy this for at least 10 years befor they outgrow it. The unit cost around 2000$ and I assembled it. It was easy and quick and very well made. I think it was money well spent. The girls are always on it.

Just a thought!! The maintenance othe wood will drive you nuts, To many splinters as the wood dries out. Look into the plastic type. Just my .02 cents worth, been there/done that. Jim in N M
