Trying to find out what the flow rate(cfm) has on the weld? Have a little 135amp Hobart.

Hi Walt,
You don't provide an enough information to give you an exact case specific recommendation.

There are variables to be considered such as; base metal composition, base metal thickness, and wire diameter.

Assuming you are using .035 solid wire to make butt welds on steel up to 1/4", the flow rate would be 25 CFH.

Thanks. I am using .030 solid. On nothing thicker than 3/16". Was wondering exactly how does the flow rate effect the weld? Been searching the net but nothing explains it. Is anything over the recommended flow rate a waste of gas? Less flow rate I assume the weld can get contaminated easier?

Hi Walt,
You are right. Too little shielding gas means not enough protection surrounding the arc. The primary function of the gas is to keep nitrogen and oxygen away from the base metal when it reaches it's melting point. Hydrogen is detrimental as well.

Too much gas and it is wasted. Too much or too little gas can also effect arc characteristics, penetration and bead profile, weld metal mechanical properties, undercut tendency, and welding speed.
