Hi
I have an old 045av that has been setting for a while. I rebuilt the carb before the extended period of non use. I recently started the saw and it runs irregularly. The saw acts as if the ign is cutting out. Does this saw have solid state module or points? I thought the saw had solid state, but seen points listed for it on a website.
Any help would be much appreciated
Brad

Found the problem. The wire going to the switch has lost a section of insulation. It was grounding out the saw. I am going to either use some liquid tape or heat shrink to repair. I am currently using a NGK BM6A plug. Can anyone tell me if this is the correct plug? I would like to replace with a new one.
Thanks to all for the help.
Brad

Good, you got her goin. The wire and switch were my next question, IF the plug wasn't dry and white.
Don't know about the plug for 045AV, b I have 5 Stihl saws, oldest saw now is a 028Super, newest MS200T bought last year. They all take same plug, a "Bosch WSR6 F" or an "NGK BPMR 7 A". if you call Stihl they will likely send you an owners manual, althouigh for that oldie-but-goody they may xerox it in B&W.

Thanks again
It runs like a top. Got to get another chain for it Can you believe there is no spark plug reference chart for small engines on the internet? At least I wasn't able to find one. I went to Lowes and found a champion book. I bought a cj8 which was the number match for the NGK that was in the saw. It seems to run fine, not sure how long that plug will last. The plug was a little hotter then what the book called for. Those old saws sure seem to be better then the newer ones. I recently retired a small Jonsered that was almost as old as the Stihl. I replaced it with a Solo 633. I needed an arbor saw. The Solo is ok, but is heavier than the old Jonsered and doesn't cut as fast. I used to cut and sell firewood in my younger days. Would use that little Jonsered to clear acres of orange and lemon groves. Was a tough little saw. Had to retire if for lack of parts. We used the Stihl for Eucalyptus wind breaks. Sure is a strong saw. Do you know of a good source for saw parts? The local Stihl dealer here is not easy to deal with. Kinda got an attitude. For that owners manual, guess I will contact the factory.
Thanks again Brad

hi Brad, Yes a sparkplug chart would be handy. Unless there were an absolute rock solid reason to run an "other than stock" plug I wouldn't. Even some of the interchange plugs shown on charts don't always line up as they should, for dissapating qualities. I would never run a hotter plug to compensate for another problem. that's a good saw you have. i had an 041 for twelve years and never did anything but rebuild carb once and changed plug once, of course this excludes always keeping chain sharp and making shure it had a good sprocket and bar maintenance and air filter cleaning. that saw is still running like new though not very often.
Now-a-days I hear so many stories about siezed pistons that i am very religous about fresh fuel mix, "correct" parts and treat my saws very carefully, because they work hard for me. I have a very good Stihl dealer locally and have dealt with madsen's online and was happy with them. Madsens has a very informative website if you find the "site map".

Thanks I checked out Madsens. Good site, sent an e-mail to Stihl for the owners manual.

Points I think. What does the spark plug look and smell like right after you try to start it?

The saw starts fine. One minute it runs great, then it starts cutting out. This usually happens when the saw is at full throttle and under load. I thought the saw had a solid state ign module because it says electronic on the side.

I believe the 045 was made when they changed to electronic ign. if it says electronic, it likely is, unless it was bought on ebay, then anything could happen. I always have a spare plug with my spares for the saw, includes spare chains, bar retaining nut, sprocket clip, pull cord and a screw or two. I went a long way to say I would try the spare spark plug. how's the spark plug wire? One way to check this ign is with the little ign tester they sell that looks like a sparkplug with a wider adjustable gap. there are electronic KV testers that sell for reasonably cheap.
Have you adjusted the carb hi and low OK, is the fuel filter clear, is the filter in the tank and the fuel hose and the pulse hose OK? does the spark plug look sooty and wet when this happens or is it dry and white?

I believe the saw was purchased new by my Dad in the early to mid 70s. From early on we had a problem with the saw not shutting off corectly. It would keep running after the ignition was turned off. The saw shop never could get it fixed even after consulting with Stihl several times. We finally solved the problem by shutting it off using the choke. When I did the carb rebuild I replaced the filter and gas line. I'll check the spark plug and wire again. It all seemed to be ok when I did the carb. That was 2 years ago and the saw has sat unused since then. I think you are right on the fact the saw was one of the first models to have electronic ign. That was probably the reason we were having the shut off issue. I will check the saw wire and plug tomorrow and will post then. Thanks Brad

I have an 041av that says electronic and is. The earlier had points, but as others have said, if it says electronic there are no points. If it has a gas line attached to the fuel filter in the tank, as someone else mentioned, check that. I seen several collapse or deteriorate and close up. This is common on anything with a fuel filter and hose in the tank. That series saw is a bear of a saw which gave Stihl the reputation they have.

If you feel the problem is electrical you may want to check for bare spots on the ground wire that goes to your ignition switch,, it may be grounding out against the saws frame and cutting off the spark
good luck
