My next project is a new mailbox post... I've cut numbers from 1" plate approx 1' tall and plan to weld them together as the post for my mailbox. I remember seeing some reflective paint or paint system where there is a white background and something sprinkled into the paint to make it reflective like the standard road signs. anyone know where I can find that product ?? how expensive. ?? I'd like for these numbers to show up from the road and this way would be "way cool" thanks John

A few years ago I'd finally had it with the vandals... built my little 'house' shaped mailbox from 1/8" plate and mounted it on a 4" stick of conduit.. I now have the last bat that hit it... and I'm sure the kid had sore hands for a couple of weeks..and he didn't even chip the paint

I don't worry about liability... why did they hit my mailbox... drunk ? drugs ? normal drivers don't hit them...

I think you guys have solved my problem.. found a pallet load of glass beads for our bead blaster at the tractor shop at work... with plenty for experimentin'... now... some grinding, filing, and chamfering and welding.. then some more grinding...

thanks for all the input and good ideas

john

I really hate to throw cold water on your project, but don't build it too strong. If'n someone hits it, and gets hurt, there are liability issues. Could I suggest a 4x4 wooden post, with a couple 1/2" holes drilled in it at the base - ground level, crossing each other? Would at least look like you're not building a booby trap. Reflective paint is a great idea. Makes it visible - better target for mailbox football. Been the victim too many times. I put up the cheapest box I can find. Don't do nothing fancy. Just makes you madder when you get up in the morning to find all your hard work and artistry strewn across your front lawn.

Rustoleum has flourescent spray, 5 colors, about $8.
2 inch tape, 10 yards. $38 at Graingers or other industrial supply. Also check Home Depot, Lowes, etc.
Glass beads sounds like the best way. Just be sure to do it in the grass, (not in the shop).

You can use regular paint and dust it with glass beads while it is still wet. Had a customer that painted highway stripes and that's what they use. The glass is the same as auto-machine shops use in a glass beader so maybe you could get a small amt from one to try out.

Hey John, with letters a foot high made out of 1" plate you could paint it any color you want and nobody could miss it. Don't have to worry about vandalism with a post like that. All kidding aside, try the link to a site with the reflective paint like your looking for. You didn't specify a color, but it looks like all they have is yellow. If you want somethig else maybe you can call them and they can steet you in the right direction.

have you thought about buying some of the red/white reflective strips you see on the side of trucks/trailers these days. you could maybe cut them apart to where one letter was all white and the next was all red? i have bought several for projects at school and i believe they close to 24 inches long (red around 16"/ white 8").

Some years ago I bought both white and yellow reflective paint from a commercial paint distributor. I remember the paint was made by " 3M Company " . This may give you a starting point.
If you are along a state or federal highway there may be restrictions on reflective objects and what colors can be used. Might be good to check if it applies to you.
