Discard your Portable Air Tank!

Just purchased a new portable air tank at the local farm supply store this week because of the sale price (10 gal. for 18.00). After taking it out of the box, I noticed that it is stamped on the bottom: "Warning-Discard use after years 12-2002 / Made in India". Luckily, I saw that warning, so I can discard it, before using it!
I've heard of the "Throw away society"; but this seems like they should have a dumpster by the store's front door, so you could dispose of your purchases before bringing them home.
How long have they been stamping "freshness dates" on air tanks?

If you don't want the new air tank, you can mail it to me:) I use 40 LB propane tanks. Plenty of them around after the new OPD requirements. They have a blowout plug in them so they are not very likely to explode at the 125 lbs pressure I put in them. Hard to get the stink out of them, but what the heck they are free :)

Of course I was just being facetious in my remarks about a warning that seems to indicate to discard something even before it's sold. But, it's a good example of the foreign-made products that are squeezing out U.S.A. manufacturers on a daily basis. I'm no different than most people...price is more of a lure than anything, but paying a cheap price at times buys you cheap, questionable j-u-n-k!

Since this was from India, the translation could be off. It might mean discard after 12 years with a starting year of 2002. That would make more sense.

A good thing to know for sure, my tanks were bought some time ago before the notices were put on them.

I understand the older ones were good for the life of the tank. ;o)

If you wanted to test the safety of your storage tank, you could (pretty easily) test it. I used to do the tests when I was in the service.
A "hydrostatic test" is simply filling the container to be tested with water, and then with something like a porta power with an inline gauge, pump up the pressure to 150% of the vessels working pressure. Maintain this pressure in the tank, then GENTLY tap at welds, fittings, etc. If there are no leaks, you're pretty much good to go. If the tank has a flaw, it will crack or leak water, but won't explode, which is what would happen if it were being tested with plain air pressure.
In industrial applications, tanks are teated once every 5 years (I think that's the interval). If the tanks pass, they're good for another 5 years.
Hope this helps!

How will the porta-power increase the pressure in the tank, since it uses a sealed oil system to operate jacks, etc.?

Sorry, I was giving a "condensed" version. You would need to come up with a series of bushings, reducers, or whatever was applicable/necessary to connect the discharge end of the porta-power to the tank. If the tank was completely full of water, you wouldn't lose much oil out of the porta power when pumping up the pressure. I know you're right, though. The normal porta-power set up isn't geared for this type operation. It's (the porta power) just a handy way to test these types of tanks without paying someone a fee for certification, or throwing a tank away because it looks old.

The lawyers probably advised that posting.

It was the D.O.T. that required it on all tanks that hold air/liquid under pressure.

Fire extinguishers also are hydro tested at 12 years , but only one time. They won't be serviced after 24 years. So when you buy a used one, check the date on the cylinder and any accompanying tags.
