I was wondering if there is a market for good used propane tanks used for residential supply. I need a 500 gallon tank for my house and was considering purchasing instead of renting. Anybody have ideas or suggestions or comments? Thanks.

I was in the same position last year. The advantage of purchasing your own tank is that you can have any propane company fill it and can search for the best price when you need filled. I have seen prices vary by as much as $.30 a gallon from supplier to supplier. The disadvantage is that you are responsible for all the maintenance, which isnt such a big deal, and the initial cost of the tank and set up.
I eventually opted to lease my tank ($14 a year for 3 years)due to large amount of money involved in the other option. (about $1000) If I could have found a suitable tank with a good price I definitely would have gone that route.

Thanks for the comments crazy. The rental rate in my area is $35/year. If I could find the lease rate you found I would go that route as well. I also considered burying the tank, which would require me to purchase. Still looking. P.S. I love reading this forum. I only wish I had more time to reply to some of the questions. I halfway expect someone will reply with a suggestion like "20 years ago I connected two old water heaters and a banged up air compressor together for my propane tank and they work fine, however, I have noticed a funny smell cirulating around the yard for some time now." :>) lol....Thanks again.

Farm auctions - any place with a crop drier will have a tank or 2 for sale. Those that weren't leasing, anyhow.
