How noisy is an oil lube air compressor?

I am going to purchase a 60 gallon air compressor this summer and need to know just how noisy are they? Never having had one before I was wondering if I could stand it inside the shop with me or should I pour a pad and make a shed outside for it? I'm looking at a single stage Campbell Hausfeld 5 hp or less. Also, if the motor says 20 amps is that while running or does that account for starting? I have run #6/3 copper wire 145 feet to the shop just for the machine.

Much of the noise is created by the intake. On "better" compressors the intake is made to accept standard pipe. If you remove the filter and plumb the intake out through the wall and reinstall the filter outside most of your noise will be outside the shop where it won't bother you. This will also allow clean, cool air to be pumped which will extend the life of the filters and the compressor. If you install compressor in an area that drops below 40 degrees then you should have some type of heat on the compressor head, other wise initial startups will be extremely hard on motor and compressor head will not get the lube that it needs.

As stated it is noisy! In fact all direct drive compressors are noisy. The belt drive units are very quiet by comparison. I bought one of the direct drive compressors once; my wife couldn't hear the TV upstairs when it ran in the insulated basement. I returned it and bought a belt drive, 2 stage, 3hp unit and it is very quiet comparativly. The wire you ran will carry a load to just over 49 amps, and 220 requires half the current of 110 if you decide to buy a larger compressor.

You would be better off to buy a better unit like a Quincy two stage and run it at 220V. Very quiet and it runs slower.

I've got a 60 gallon campell hausfeld in my shop. It makes a quite a bit of noise with a metal liner in the shop. I'am planning to move it out side this spring. If you live in a cold climate you should have some way to provide heat to the pump in cold weather for easier startups and longer life. Somthing like a light bulb or magnetic heater.

Newer air compressors tend to be noisy, because they run twice as fast as the older units, to get more capacity with less size and weight. I put mine behind an insulated partition to block some of the noise. It is not tighly enclosed, so there is adequate air flow for cooling, but it takes the edge off the noise.

20 Amps would be the full load rating with the unit running.
