Need to cut odd shapes in 1/4" stainless. Have been using a Gerber CNC milling cutter that cuts any pattern imaginable but the solid carbide end mills aren't cheap.

Does plasma cutting leave a finished edge? Smooth and without spatter?

asked my boss steve today about a clean cut, we have 50 and 80 amp the 80 cut 3/4 wide open, most times end up cutting uneven with slag, if your using a pattern machine and able to fine tune the speed it will come close, what about lazer cutting? they usally can maintain a .005 tolarance, stainless is a bugger sometimes my boss says only comes close thats with new tips, let us know when you get it tweeked:)

larry, first thing, i have never seen a gerber
set up as a mill. when you cut with plasma using cnc, you can tweek the cutting speed so as to minimize dross.
we go for speed here at work, not edge quality.
if you want, talk to your gas supplier,
not everyone runs compressed air for plasma,
there are various gasses that will improve
things. so this leads to my question, are you
going to adapt the gerber by putting the torch
on it?, maybe you'll have to hang it on an arm
over the side of the table, and build
a slat table.

They had a big plasma unit where I worked 7-8 years ago. We cut 1/2" stainless. If everything was in good shape(head and tip), it would cut fairly smooth on thicker down to sheet metal. It usually needed touching up a bit though. I say big, but not sure of the amps or the name. It was a unit on wheels less than 2 feet square.

No they wont cut 1\4" material that cleanly, at least my 50 amp unit wont, sheet metal to about 12 gauge is very clean but you wll get slag on 1\4" stuff.
