Log splitter design question ?

Guys I am fabricating up a splitter and am using a 4"x6" tube for the beam. Need to make a slide for the wedge. Thinking of welding a piece of angle on both sides and then making up the slide with a flat plate and then spacer for angle then a lower guide. Will be same as most 20 ton units seen in Northern.Theirs are H channel. What suggestions would you give on the thickness of the metal? Would a 5/8 wedge plate 10"x10" with 1/4" spacer and 1/2" lower guide sliding on a 1/4" angle track each 1 1/2 inches wide give me enough strength and a useful life. Anyone have a similair set up and what thickness were they designed with. Hey thanks for all the advice guys!!

Might be late sending this but i build the "wedge" solid at the end stroke end[ 1/4-1/2 inch past full ram extension] mill a angle of around 30degrees on the front edge. Under cut the wedge and fill with weld where it is secured to your beam to give a smooth working[looking] area for the wood to pass over. I prefer to use 1inch plate for the knife[ a small unit used 5/8 inch, as customer wanted.
There is no need to weld on "wings" such as angles and extra plates to "split" the wood, just let the piece pass over the knife, stop just short of completly splitting, set the next piece and finish pushing the first piece into your hands. The extra "wedges" only consume hp and strain the hydraulics for no need.
The 4 way splitter i have built but found the bottom two pieces can get jammed and attempt to either lift or twist the knife from the beam, especially on a knot or twisted grain piece.
Don't build a machine that makes you work to keep pace with it, but build one that is paced by you.

I use18"x18"x1" thick.I cut in half and made 2 splitters.Used 1" grader blade for wedge which is welded to beam.It is 20" tall and 12"wide.Milled cutter angle to 12 degrees on each side.Used 2500 psi 2 stage pump ,14 hp Kohler engine.and 5"x24"stroke cyl.I have neved seen it hung up on thing we were splitting.

ps the beam was H beam

This sounds like a splitter I bought can't recall the name it is a three point design. It has a 4x6 tube with a wedge fixed and the plate moves its guide is a larger piece of tube to slide over the 4x6 it works quite well for me. good luck a well built splitter saves alot of work.

Just for kicks, have you thought about welding the wedge solid on the end, and putting a plate on the hydraulic ram to push the wood over the wedge? Then, make the ram plate as wide as the base tube, and all you would need to do is weld a plate on either side of the ram plate to overhang the base as guides. This is just a thought, what you have sounds like it would work well also.

Agree with making the wedge solid....but I am making it horizontal and vertical type.....almost have to have the wedge on the top....thanks for the posts..

In addition to "a plate on either side of the ram plate to overhang the base as guides", would also need something under the base tube to keep the 'ram plate' from coming up off of the base tube..... ...I agree, I like pushing the wood into the wedge, rather than wedge into the wood.

i built one out a truck spring for front of wedge and welded 3/8 plate down each side with a 4 inch plate down the back and one 2 inch in the middle..sharped the front..made wedge longer at top than bottom by about 1/2 inch..so wood would trun to push down rather than up...have nice day may god bless
