The check engine light just came on on my friends 99 Mazda 626. It has a 2.0l I4 with a 4 speed OD tranny. Is there any special key sequence that will flash a code on a dashboard light like a Ford will with the check engine light? Is there any way I can hook up an analog multimeter to a plug on the engine to read a code? I have read it is an OBD II (?) setup.

Also, doing research on this has revealed that this car's particular transaxle is prone to going pop in a big way. Is there any way to predict if this is going to happen? I know it does shift into reverse or drive from park with a terrific "whap" sometimes. Any help is appreciated.

I hve a problem with my brakes jammed on. When I first looked at the problem I seen lots of brake dust on the front left wheel. Assuming this individual caliper was causing the problem I replaced the seals. There was some scoring inside but I had seen worse. This servicing of the caliper didn't resolve the problem so I replaced the caliper. The problem is still there. As the car does not pull to one side and will not "coast" very well when I ease of the gas, I now feel that the braking system is faulty. Has anyone else had this problem?

A lot of the chain auto parts stores can read the codes for free.(Here I use Auto Zone)

Roger,
I'm not a Mazda tech, but I do know something about OBDII. You can't get flash codes from them like you could in the old days. It takes an expensive tool that usually is only found in serious auto shops. Often, they will pull the codes for you for free, or at a small cost, if they aren't super busy and you ask kindly. There are literally hundreds of things that can turn on the Check Engine light, so don't try to fix it till you know for sure why it's on. I know this might seem like an evasive answer, but I don't want you to spend hundreds of $$ and still not get the thing fixed. Good Luck and God Bless,
Tommy

I have one of those as a work car. 34-36 mpg with the six cylinder. I happen to be fond of the rig. The tranny was replaced this summer due failure but rig has over 100k miles. Popping sound I thought was CV joint but turned out to be tranny.

If tranny is replaced MAKE SURE they fully insert CV into trans. It has a spring clip that the shaft pushes against until it "snaps" into place. Failure to do so will result in premature CV failure. This was replaced at mechanics cost due to their oversight.

One quirky thing I found was that if radiator coolant gets low the car will "stumble" while idleing. After topping off the fluids the idle leveled right out. Don't ask me how or why they would engineer a system this way - just know this was also confirmed by local mechanic.

Yea, best thing I can think of to remedy the problem is buy a GM product and stay away from Fords and off brands at all cost.
Just kidding, hope you get it figured out!
I would steer away from the Ford products though. I have had 2 and will never own another one again, pieces of junk!

'96 and later is OBDII. AutoZone will usually pull the codes for you. My daughter had a '96 Mazda 626, so I know a tad about the car. It's essentially a Ford. The Haynes manual is the same for the 626 and a Ford Probe (at least I think it's a Probe). The transmissions have a pretty bad track record. Try googling for Mazda transmission trouble and you'll see what I mean. Hers never died, but the check engine light pretty much stayed on all the time. Her problem was a torque converter clutch solenoid. It might help to change the fluid. The tranny has a drain plug so it's easy. I changed the fluid everytime I changed the oil. You only get about half of it out, but you get half of it everytime, and the price of fluid is cheap compared to the cost of the transmission. The first time I changed it the transmission fluid looked like the motor oil. I figured replacing the transmission would have cost more than the car was worth, so she ditched it. Tell your friend I wish him good luck.
