Best way to keep a 6V battery charged?

O expert ones,
I use our '47 Ford 2N maybe once every couple of months (should fire it up monthly but you know), so the 6V tends to run down. I'll hit it with the 8amp 6V charger, bring it back up, but is this the best way to keep this battery in good health? Should I keep it on a trickle (how much is a trickle - 1/2 amp?) all the time? Solar panel?? Measure its health with voltmeter or measure spec. gravity (I'm hearing that's best)? Is it true that you can use a 8V battery? Any suggestions welcome!!

You might use a battery maintianer to keep your battery at full charge, it will not charge a low battery just maintain it at full charge once you charge it with a regular charger. It uses 110VAC and may be left on the battery indefinately; or, you may use a solar maintainer(also indefinately) if there is a window or other opening for sunlight to shine on the tractor.

And where do you get a 6-volt solar maintainer?

I put the charger on the 6 volt battery of my Farmall about once a month over the winter. Let it on for a few hours so it can soak up a good charge. You're right, a hydrometer is the best way to check a battery, but it's a PITA with sealed batteries in a battery box with a cover, so I almost never check them that way.

Needed to use the tractor last Sunday, about 8 degF in it's unheated shed. Grunted a little in protest, but it started up OK.
Charged batteries don't go bad as quickly as discharged batteries and I have been doing this for years with good success.
BTW, the battery in that tractor is over 9 years old.

For my AC D10 & AC G I bought a $19.00 charger from Wally World. It has 2A (amp) trickle charge with auto sensing. I just keep it plugged in to the rig I expect to use which now is the D10.
