Kerosene fuel shelf life?

I have 5 gallons of Kerosene that is four years old. I want to use it in a Kerosene heater. Is there a limit on how old the fuel can be and still be okay to burn. I had it stored in a new metal can in the barn Thanks for any help. PS yep I did buy it for Y2K

As said, kerosene will keep for many years-if stored properly. Your main concern, even though the metal can was never opened, is water contamination. Kerosene, and all fuel oil types have a natural affinity to attract water. A fuel strainer that seperates the water out should be used to prevent problems with the heater. At a minimum the container should be handled gently to avoid mixing the kerosene and any water that may be laying on the bottom when pouring into the heater.

I remember once upon a time on Aug 14th when the province of Ontario and several north eastern states where sitting in the dark wondering what happened for several days.
Keep the kerosene,heater and purchase a couple of 1" wick hurricane lamps and a Aladdin mantel lamp from Lehman's non electric catalogue. Next outage in the winter it will be your turn to laugh. The lamps make enough heat to keep a small room from freezing for a while too.
Sealed kerosene kept in a dark cool place will outlast any of us on the board.

The kero you have should be used in a Diesel or a home furnace. Get fresh fuel for the (portable)heater.
