Does anyone have experiance with the Delta Y generator using single phase 240 in and getting 3 phase 240 out?
I have been told that it is better than using a 3 phase motor to generate 3 phase.
Any help would be appreciated.

I use a nice 15 horse roto phase generator that was built by an outfit in Ephrada Pa. this is a 15 horse motor with several capacitor banks for starting the roto on single phase 240V and clarifying the 240v three phase output. I use an AB size 3 magnetic starter to start the roto so if we have a power blip the system will shutdown completely before restarting so it won't blow a capacitor, And I have it wired so I can start it up from anywhere in the shop. Keep in mind you will need to install a three phase breaker/distibution panel for the generator's output. It ain't a cheap proposition up front but worth it, used three phase motors are dirt cheap and new ones are real reasonable on eBay and you have instant reversing capabilities with the correct starter. Make sure if you pull control voltage off one leg of the generated power you don't hook up to the "wild leg" as this is usually 240v (the rest being 110V)and moderated by the motor load but will fry a control circuit and starter holding coil in a matter of seconds. Be wise and invest in a good multimeter so you can measure volts and check amp loads of the motors you have running

Nothing beating using a three phase generator to make three phase or a cheapy solid state variable frquency drive set at 60hz. Likely you are thinking of a Y or Delta three phase motor or generator fed single phase and taking quasi three phase of the wild leg. Cheap simple but dangerous to spin the shaft by hand to get it turning or requires capacitors (good idea) and/or a starter motor. I do have a three phase generator in the shed with all the windings accessable. Can go 120/208 three phase 10.8Kw, three phase 240v 12.5Kw. And true single phase with 180 degree phase separation on two lines with 120/240 at 7.2 Kw. Have to wire it Y with two phases in series subtracting however.
