I had recent knee replacement and my dr doesn't want me carrying 40# hay bales this summer. Drag 'em, he says. That will get old real fast. Who makes a good 12V winch with a remote control that will bring them to my power tailgate? TIA

It would probably be cheaper to change Doctors. Knee replacement din't bother my dad as far as loading apickup load of hay. He was 78 when he had his knee replaced. Check around for a good Physical(terrorist) Therapist.

Hi Bernie;
Depending on what part of the country, brand preference is a regional thing, so I'm told. Warn, Ramsey & Superwinch seem to be most prevalent. They all come with remote control, but I think Ramsey is the only one that offers a wireless remote. Warn discontinued their wireless remote a few years ago. However, Ramsey makes a wireless that will fit a Warn, but one assumes all risk when doing so. I suggest giving careful consideration to what the winch can do for you besides moving the bales you mentioned. Winches are a very powerful tool that can do all kinds of jobs. So, get one that would be heavy enough to handle some larger projects you may encounter. They're kind of like a tractor: it's amazing (to me anyway!) how much stuff comes up over time that you can use it for.
You can compare features & prices online to get you started on gathering info and get a feel for what's out there.
Good luck, take your time, and get well soon.
Roger

Another thing you need to consider is how fast you want the load to move and getting the cable strung out again. For your use, seems like a capstan head mounted to a gear motor would better fit your needs. Fasten a rope to the bail (with maybe something that looks like ice tongs), three turns around the capstan and pull away.

For a light duty, low capacity winch (100 lbs is really light duty) you might try Rural King, TSC, Harbor Freight or Homier Tool. I think they all have web pages. I think I saw one advertised for $49.95 somewhere. Gordon in IN

Isn't it more like 1000 lbs?

I think one should consider line speed in and out.
Some are realy slow, like 6 feet/minute. I don't know what your spending limit is, but a Tommy Lift or similar tailgate lift will be a lot handier than a winch. Just roll on a bale or two, and lift away. They're good for about 1000 lbs. You might look for a used one.

Disregard the last paragraph of the above post. You already have the lift.

Warn and any number of other companies make 12v winches for automotive use... load capacities from around 2,000 # to more than 12,000 # ... depends on how much $$ you want to spend. Look on the 'net or in any catalog that specializes in 4 wheel drive truck parts & equipment. If you're looking for one a bit smaller, they even make 'em to fit ATV's... I think Cabela's sells those!

I dont know about a 12v winch but I do know that there is a chainsaw powered winch available through www.baileys-online.com They have a few different types of winch that can be hooked right up to most any chainsaw powerhead and used to pull almost any object that is moveable. take a look at what they have and see what you think. BTW how much are you planning on spending on a winch? if the limit is around $750 baileys can hook you up with everything that you need.

WOW!!
Have not seen one of those in forever. As a younger man in N. Idaho we had one that used rope. Or perhaps rope replaced the cable. Regardless, used it to pull snow cats out, elk up a bank etc.

My Dad still has it and uses every elk season to this day. He has it hooked onto a big Homelylite.

Rob, I took a look at the chain saw winch. Looks to me like a person would be flitting with disaster to use the thing, should the cable break. May could fool my mother n law into operating it, on the hard pulls. goof

I help run a truck and 4x4 shop and winches are a popular item. Our shop handles warn products and the main reason is customer service. As a farm kid getting replacement parts is important to me,if I can't get parts I won't sell something. So watch what you by and remember dead weight is way different than a rolling load. You may need a larger winch than you think
