Fluorescent Lights

I have some old 4 ft florescent lights. The facilities manager where I work says the ballasts might contain PCB's and that I should get rid of them. I'm thinking about replacing them with 8 footers. I hear the new ones have digital ballasts and are excellant as far as lighting quality and my eyes seem to need a whole lot of light now a days. Anybody know anything about the 8 footers as far as cost of fixtures, bulbs, where to get them? Anybody have them? Thanks

Not positive on this, hopefully somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading something someplace saying that 4ft flourescents are the way to go since you can buy two 4ft bulbs for less than the cost of one 8ft bulb.

We have been retrofitting our facility with fluorescent fixtures to replace HPS fixtures. I selected 4' tubes because they are easier to handle and can be used in different configurations and fixture styles. You are pretty much limited to strip lighting with 8'.
The electronic ballasts are much better than the old ones for life, energy efficiency, noise, and light output.

A couple weeks ago I bought some high output 8' fluorescent lights from Menards for $37.50 plus about $6 for each bulb. A standard 8' light was only about $25 but they put out alot less light and the HO models will start to -20 degrees. I only have two of the fixtures temperary installed so far but they put out a very nice quality of light. I priced these same lights at one of our local lumber yards and they were over $60 each there.
