Hi Guys,

I finally got my "ebay special" $100 snowblower mounted on this old lawn tractor. Gearboxes checked & filled, lift works great and got the running gear to engage and disengage using the existing tractor mower deck control. So far, so good.

Now, my question: I've never been within 5 miles of a snowblower. Relatively speaking, how fast should that front auger be turning?

When it is wound up, should it be spinning, say like the speed on a baler pickup; or like a combine pickup? Or, do they run slower than that?

This one seems to turn pretty slow to me....wondering if perhaps I need to change a pulley or two. Or, is this a trial and error thing?

Thanks for your help,

Allan

On 2 stage walk behinds, drive pulley is on engine crank so RPM=engine RPM.These use appx 2.5-3" pulley to drive appx 9-10" blower pulley.Soooo if engine is peaking at 3600rpm w/3" pulley, then by rough calculation a 9" driven pulley(impeller) would be turning appx 1/3 engine speed or 1300rpm MAX(900-1000 is prolly more realistic). Most impellors are NOT precision balanced so too fast is prolly not good.As to the auger, its driven in your case by geared shaft from impeller,so if impeller speed is proper, auger will take care of itself.

the fan should spin about 1700 rpm and the auger about 350.

How can you tell that it's a two stage? I looked pretty hard and couldn't see a blower in back. Maybe my bifocals need to be adjusted. And yes, my son did talk me out of the snow blower, but my scoop shovel operates cheaper. He's not getting my tractor/loader, though.

Hi Fixer,

Here's a better picture.

When it is wide open, I can feel the air flow at 2 or 2 1/2 feet out from the spout. But, I think I'm gonna have to speed her up.

That impeller "might" be running at 500 rpm, but that's about all. It doesn't make any noise like any other type of "blower" I've ever heard. 'Course, this one is in miniture too.

Wish I had some snow to try it out on; Hmmmmm

Did he send any spare shear bolts with that blower? If not, you might want to check the bolts in the auger to make sure they are shear bolts...and buy some spares.

How did we know it's a two stage? We're psychic, that's how!

Actually, if you look at the front auger in the picture, you can see there are no paddles in the center, like a single-stage would have.

Further, Allen gave it all away in a previous post, when he posted the ebay auction ad for it, which had photos clearly showing it to be a two-stage.

Click link below, then click "shaky deal".

I built one some years ago, as I remember the
impeller ran about 1000 RPM. Auger RPM really
doesn't matter that much and since it runs relative to the impeller I wouldn't worry about
it.

I operated airfield snow blowers in the Air Force. they were taller than me and 7-8 feet wide would throw 80 tons of snow a minute and the "auger" on the front did not spin very fast at all but the impellar in back would get with the program and they were drivwen by a big V-8 detroit and the truck had a separate motor. I think that is a sharp little outfit I have a allis D-17 with a loader and a 6 foot blade and a 4 wheeler with a 48 inch blade.

That turned out pretty well, didn't it?

My two-stage snowblower turns about 100 rpm on the front (augur) and 600 rpm at the blower.

I could use more rpm's at the blower since it only throws snow three or four feet beyond the end of the chute. I'd like it to blow ten or twelve feet so I wouldn't have to blow snow twice from the pad outside the carport. It's sheltered on one side.

used em all my life, never gave a thought about speed of auger as long as it discharges snow good...good question by the way. if you try blowing thru wet, sticky snow, i think spraying silicon in discharge chute helps from plugging..

What the other guys (that weren't smart *ss) said. Looks like you got a deal ! Nice outfit. Now you will want a snow cab of some sort. At least a clear shield to keep the blowing snow from blowing back on you! You can control the blower but not the wind! Have fun!!!

Hello Allan: On a two stage blower like yours, the front auger would rotate at 100-200 rpms ( guess ),it chews up the drifts and feeds the impeller which spins real fast. When blowing you travel at the lower gear. It wasn't a dumb question. Gregg in Ontario -expert in snow removal

Yes! That's about what it is turning.

It just seemed slow to me after being around farm machinery all my life.

Thanks,

Still fast enough to do some serious damage. Keep all fingers hands, gloves, scarves etc. out of it. If it plugs shut it down or at least use a stick not an arm.

You definitely do not have a dumb question! I can't see the back of the blower, but it looks like it is a single stage blower, meaning the auger does eveything including throwing the snow into the discharge chute fast enough to make the snow fly up and out of the chute. If it is this way the auger runs pretty fast. My guess, and this is only a guess, is the auger should run at half the engine speed or maybe a little faster. My son borrowed mine for the winter so it is not here for me to look at to give me an idea. I cobbled a snow blower to my garden tractor about five years ago so I had to go through the learning process too.

I wouldn't worry about the speed of the front auger nearly as much as the speed of the blower wheel. You'll know if that is right if it blows the snow a reasonable distance with sufficient force to keep the discharge spout from plugging.

The front auger is driven off of the blower wheel shat with a worm gear, so it's gonna be a LOT slower than the blower wheel, and the front auger does not need to turn very fast to feed the snow back to the blower wheel.

Bob is right. That is a 2 stage blower and all the front auger really has to do is to keep the snow churning as it feeds the impeller so it does'nt pack up. On a single stage the auger and impeller are a single unit so it will spin like mad.
