Sears garage door opens by itself...

I've reset the codes several times, thinking that maybe someone has a similar code. It usually seems to happen in the afternoon.

It might be caused by a random signal from a neighbors PC, phone, or maybe the automatic meter readers used by the city to read water/electric useage. I've also heard of cons using a device which sends random signals while they drive around so they can come back later and steal.

Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening. I have a great neighbor across the street who closes it for me, but it's still bothersome.

Our Sears automatic garage door opens at random time and we have tried to trace it various things but have also reached a dead end..any ideas?

I agree with Tim. Check the down pressure on your door. You may need to back it off a little. Since it happens in the afternoon the sun may be heating the door or some other part of the system causing in to expand therefore creating more down pressure. I would try backing the down pressure off to see if it fix your problem.

I had a simpler problem with my Genie garage door opener, mine would open up in the middle of the night. My problem was the remote control unit. It had a small crack on the inside and I quess the weather or humidity caused it turn on. The unit that went bad was the one I kept in the garage so I could close the door. I have a control unit hard wired to open and close the door by the back door of the garage but I used the remote at the front or at the garage door opening. I threw the bad unit away and replaced it with another spare unit I had and the problem went away. It's been over a year now and still no problem.

It's the little electronic beam boxes located near the floor to stop the door in the event something is in the opening when the door is closing. Try cleaning and realigning the source box one side and the receiver box on the other and the problem should go away. Mine had dirt splashed on it and it did the same as yours.

If it is one of those that you adjust the stop with screw adjustments on the powerhead itself, Back the tension off a little. That cured my sisters door. Now its not haunted. good luck

Just be glad it's only your garage door. They had a thing on the radio awhile back about a preacher that had a "male implant" that was set up with a remote. Just so happend the remote on the garage door at the house beside the church was on the same frequence. So everytime the garage door went up so did he.... True or not I don't know, but something like that would definately be embarassing.

If this is the type that has a wire hanging down as the receiver antenna, you might try shortening the wire little by little to see if the reception range will be reduced. That way it won't open until you're right next to it. Maybe reposition the antenna wire so the signals are received differently. It may or may not help depending on the strength of the interfering signal.

If security means anything to you, I'd replace the opener.

Alternately, for about $60.00 or so, you can disable the radio part of the opener, and buy a replacement kit from Sears, or other sources, that consists of a new radio reciever that you wire into the terminals that connect to your wall-mount pushbutton.

These newer radio control systems use the so-called "rolling code" technology that is supposed to be immune to interferance, or deliberate code cracking.
