A local farm store has a hitch kit which can be adapted to fit a full-size Chevy, Ford, or Dodge. The cross tube telescopes on each side for different frame widths.

Are there any dark secrets I should know before I buy one of these kits ?

I went through this myself and it was suggested (here I think) that I go to a reputable welding shop and price a hitch. To my supprize they quoted a very nice welded hitch that is at least twice as heavy as any factory job for 2/3 as much money. I am very glad I went that route. When talking class 3 loads and stresses you should be concerned more about the quality of the hitch than how easy it can be moved of installed IMO.

I got one of the hitch kits that you described for my 3/4 ton Dodge. Thought when it got it I was savin money. It also has adjustable back so you can riase or lower the ball depending on what you were pullin. I've moved it to my 97 1/2 ton Dodge. The bad side is the square tubes used to make it adjusable to the chassis has play. It clanks and pulling loads heavy and sometimes light the play and clank in the square tubes really make my eyebrows rise. I wish I would have had the $ to get one made for the truck I was using. Even though I just got done plullin a trailer for three days haulin around garden tractor /w blade and snow blower.

Those adjustable hitchs are junk. If you have one and the load is not too great you can weld it up after it is bolted up and get rid of that "is it loose" worry.

Sounds like a bad deal. I was hoping to reuse it on a different truck. I'm rethinking my options now. I think I get get the solid unit for $10-$30 more.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi IHC Red,

I personally think most newer receivers are underdesigned for the weight class rating they have. I sure wouldn't abuse them beyond there rating and I would look at the class V, 2-1/2" square before buying the lighter class III.

Thanks T-Bone...

It's for a half-ton Ford, and I think my max tow would be about 5000 lbs... easy pulling on highways. I have to rent a trailer and tranplant my 1949 Farmall C about 120 miles.

Thanks. I was hoping to reuse it on a different truck someday, but I better not.

After a couple of months in the wet and maybe salt it will be so rusted you can't readjust for a different truck anyway.
