I am considering buying a metal cutting bandsaw. The one I am considering is the el cheapo Harbor Freight one that regularly cost $199. I was considering this one because it is A) cheap; B)cuts both vertical and horizontal; C) it is a supplement to my chop saw. I understand that this machince will not do what one costing 2 or 3 times it will do, but I want to know if it is a good buy and will handle light stuff, and if it will last me a decent amount of time. Any comments are appreciated.

I've had one about 1-1/2 years, wouldn't be without it (metal cutting bandsaw, that is). Mine is H/F @ $149. I just saw them on sale for that a while ago. The blade adjust design has been changed, but I don't know if it's better or not.
Mine was difficult to adjust to cut straight: as soon as the lock is loosened to make an adjustment, the original setting is lost and you have to just try again. I modified it to remain fixed when the lock bolt is loosened. So a turn of my adjustment screw moves the blade position slightly. I also added an extention table so that pieces too small for the built in vice can be either clamped to the table at any angle, or put in a drill press vice and the vice clamped to the table at any angle. The table for vertical, free hand cutting is too small and flimsy for any decent work. It needs to be modified too. It uses standard 1/2" x 64" blades. Don't buy a H/F portable band saw as blades are non standard and can only be purchased from H/H by mail..

Ditto on the standard sized blades. My 20 year old machine does a great job, but buying non-standard length blades is the pits.

I ran one of the cheap imports with 60" blades several years in a commercial shop. No trouble except took many attemps to get it adgusted to track properly. Also had a couple of the cheap drill presses which worked acceptably except never did get one to drill with the axis of the bit 90 degrees to the table but was close enough for repair work on farm machinery. those quality white blades are the Lennox brand

I bought a used Dayton (Granger) several years ago. It will cut 7" high x 12" wide either vertical or horizontal. Blade length is 101", I think. If you buy a used saw this size make sure it takes a 3/4" wide blade. Mine uses 5/8" and they are hard to get. Ellis Mfg sells them.

I got one of those sold under the Jet Label about 20 years ago. In that time all I did was put another motor on it. However, its the blade that makes them. Get one of the white blades, don't know the brand but they last longer and make better cuts.

Big Red: I've been looking at one of these myself--I get awful tired of using the sawzall or the heat wrench whenever I have to cut something off. The link below has an extensive write-up on these, along with some ideas for modification. These are all imports from China, so no matter who you buy from, you're going to get basically the same saw.

I have one...built a 6x12 trailer....two asparagus packing lines.....working on a splitter now. Cut a 4x6x3/8 tube last night. Had to turn it over to finish. Buy good blades and update the cheap bolts and motor mount. Don't force the blade and lube with water to keep blade cool. I think I got my 174.00 out of it.

I bought a Grizzly 7"X12" two years ago when I built my shop , I cut every piece of steel in it (except the sheet metal) never a problem yet , never did anything but change the blade. I don't think they sell the same saw anymore but I've been very happy with mine . www.Grizzly.com

For the money, these are great saws but do need a few personal upgrades. There are many discussions about them on the net. Look at the forums at>Link

I'm not sure what model I was using (inexpensive import), but when I tried to cut metal with it in the vertical position it was a nightmare. The metal would vibrate and jump all over. I figgured my fingers were worth more than a good looking saw cut, so I fired up the gas axe and just use the bandsaw horizontaly. oleblu
