I have the shop finished and now I would like a phone in the shop. The shop is about 300 feet from the nearest telephone jack on the outside of the house. This spring I would like to bury the telephone wire or cable, but I cant find the right wire to bury or anyone that sells the wire. What is the marking on the cable that indicates that is the right wire. I have found some that say PVC covered, but dont think it is the right cable. Any and I mean any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Go to your local telephone garage and ask for a spool of "buried drop"
They will give it to you, while your there ask if they will give you a roll of the plastic flagging to lay over top of the wire in the trench.

Just stop by your phone company and tell them your building a new house and you what to lay all the line s in the same trench line. Worked for me.

Go to Lowes. They have it and will cut any length you need. Home Depot and Menards also have it.

Just a little reminder.
When you bury your wire, should you put it in the me trench with eletrical, keep them 16" (sixteen inches) apart. To alleviate static HUM.
Might also lay some straw over your wire and if your including a water line spome straw to mark their depth for redigging up later.
Just some friendly reminders.

Go to Radio Shack and get the phone adapters that plug into your electricial outlets. About $70.00 apiece, I think. They work well, no trench to dig, no wire to run, and you can move them around or add to them as your needs change. Been using a couple for 3 years now, no trouble.

if you have found phone wire w/ a PVC jacket, you are in good shape. PVC is the same as PVC pipe. if you want more protection, you can run it in PVC conduit.1/2inch would be adequate, might cost a little more than 40 bucks for the pipe. its up to you just advice from an electrician

Call your local phone company. They should supply you with the wire. I got a quarter of a mile of it from them. Two years later I added two more phones and got another quarter of a mile from them. Good Luck.

Allan, I agree with the guy sayin hittin up your phone company repairman. I worked for a phone company for many many years. Phone guys don't like splices. So, when the bury a drop or two the spool that is left may have several hundred feet on it, but to use that spool on another drop may mean an undergound splice, nope, ain't gonna happen. Believe it or not most of them are really good folks. Not like the billing or business office folks. These guys haveta look atcha.

I used phone line from Radio shack, put it a couple of feet above my gas line in the same trench, works fine. May not last forever, but only needs a shallow trench. Can't beat a hard wired phone, I have also tried a 2.4 cordless, does not work in a metal building.

300ft is a pretty good jag of wire. I would check with the local communications co, they may lead you to where they buy from, or sell you some. See if they have a contractor and maybe they can help.
Seems "beldon or diamond" wire either would have what you need. Me thinks a 1000ft Spool of that will be around 200 bucks Plus S&H if you order it. Do a search for diamond wire and you will probably find something. Since you are connecting to the existing house set up, there may be a distance limit.

When I built my house, I just went down to the phone company and told them I had the ditch dug and needed cable to bury. They just cut off what I needed. 250'

If you can catch your local telephone company repairman, he might give you info on cable. I have obtained cable from them here in Illinois where they have laid temporary line on the ground for a bridge replacement or etc. and they let me pick it after installing permanent line. Maybe he could advise you on something in your area.

Look in your Yellow Pages for an electrical supplies wholesaler. Often, they have the direct burial phone cable, or can get it overnight.

If they won't sell to you directly, ask them for the name of a local electrician, and buy it through him.

Also, have you asked your local phone company? I've been given good, useable underground phone wire by one of the phone repair guys. It was some that they had strung out for a temporary deal, and was weathered a bit, so they would not use it, but it has worked flawlessly for me since I built my shop in 1984, and best of all, it was FREE!

Try any company that does security, or fire alarm work. You only need one pair. They have access to the big wire companies. If you get the right one, they will only sell you the footage you need...

I am an electrican and I trench all of the feeds to the new houses that we do. I just catch the local phone repair person when I see his truck, and ask for some direct burial phone wire. They would rather give me the wire than have to go out and do the job themselves.

That 900 mhz phone won't work in an metal pole barn. The barn acts as a shield.

If your shop is finished I would guess you power there. Consider getting two identical cordless phones. Keep one base in the house and the other in the shop just to keep the phone charged. Could just go with one cordless phone and remmeber to carry it with you between shop and house. Whole lot easier than running phone cable.

Well, I have tried the portable phones, but with the metal shop, and the distance, the phone will only work outside or by the window in the office.
The phone is a 900 mz and I have tried the 2.4g phones and they arent any better. They now make a 5.8g and I dont know if it would work or not.Right now I have covered wire strung from the house to the shop on top of the ground and it works good, but in the summer I do have to mow the grass and it just isnt practical. I just need to know where to get the wire and I can get it into the ground, hopefully.

Why can't you underground the wire you're using now in 1/2" or 3/4 PVC pipe??? The pipe will keep any wire from being exposed to acids and other stuff in the soil.
Just be sure both ends are sealed from the elements.
But if you want new: Grainger #3ZK41, Cat3, AWG 24, 2 pair, 1000', $35.
With 2 pair, if one opens, you have a spare in place.
