Compressor, doesn't like to shut off!

Hi guys, I need your help, I have a Ingersoll-Rand (Charge Air Pro), 5hp, 240 volt, single phase, 2 stage 80 gallon, air compressor. A few months ago after a long day in the shop, I went outside to the compressor room and opened the drain valve, and went in the house. The next morning to my tragic discovery, I had left the compressor running all night. The compressor seems to run fine, but does not like to shut off, once it builds its air, for the first time or any time, matter a fact. I just replaced the pop off valve, with a new 175 psi pop off valve, now it will not shut off at all. Any advice? Thank you.

Which pop off valve is blowing? Is it the one on the tank, or is it one between stages on the compressor? If it is the latter, your second stage valves are shot. Also, if it is the one on the compressor, it should not be anywhere near 175psi, but more like 60 or 70 psi. Furthermore, even if your pressure switch is set at 175 cut out and your safety valve is set for the same pressure, it is almost certain that vibration from a running compressor will cause a safety valve at it's pop off setting to blow.

Absolutely the first thing I would suspect is a pressure switch arced closed.

Ideally, you should install a motor starter for a 5hp compressor. Otherwise, you can expect more switch failures.

Hi Roger, there is a 1/2 copper tube that runs from the pump to a 90 then into a cross, the main line goes into the tank, on one side of the cross is the pop off valve that is popping, the other side is a 1/8 hose that runs down to a unit that has two wires coming in from the on / off switch. (is this the pressure switch?) This unit has a 1/4 pipe that also goes into the tank. On the bottom side of this unit is another 1/4 pipe with a T, one side has a gauge, the other side has yet another pop off valve. Could this little unit be the problem, or do you think the on / off switch is the problem? Your help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Sounds like you need to replace your preassure switch, the way it is right now is very unsafe. I wouldn't use it till I put a new switch on it you could blow your tank up and or blow out hoses and tools also, and believe me you don't want to be around if your tank blows. Its like a big gernade going off I've seen it happen and when you see a piece of steel stuck in a 2X6 and it sticks out both side it makes you think of what it could do to a person

What pressure was the compressor shuting off at? and what is the maximume pressure you see now? It could be that the steady overnight run may have worn the second stage enough it isn't reaching the old cut off pressure. Does the new pop off work at the 175 lbs pre set pressure, if it does the pressure shut off is bad. 175 psi is a lot of pressure so be carefull

Hi Ralph, the compressor shuts off at 175 psi. With the new pop off vale the compressor never did shut off. I turned the switch off. The new pop off valve is preset at 175 psi and is adjustable, not that I see how it works. Now I replaced the old pop off valve and it pops 10 to 15 times before the compressor shuts off. Now I'm I wrong in thinking there is really not much danger if the pop off valve is popping? doesn't that relieve the pressure in the tank? Thanks for your help, little out of my league here!

A pop off valve does have some saftey features but it is still mechnical and you already have one mechanical failure or the compressor would shut off. As stated in another post the points of the controler could be bad not letting them open when they should. On our compressor we have had trouble with the points being burned enough they wouldn't close thus not starting the compressor. Don't rely on the pop off as it is like playing catch with a loaded fire arm with the saftey on. Some time the saftey will get bumped and next the trigger. take care and good luck ralph

Hi Old, thanks for the advice, is it possible the switch can be adjusted. There is a threaded rod running through a spring, can I loosen or tighten that spring and help?

Yes they can be adjusted but most of the time when they start doing what you say your is doing they need to be replaced, they have a diafram in them that goes bad which is what does the shut off thing. New ones cost around $40 if I remember right, and any good farm supply place or hard ware store should have them and maybe even an auto parts place
