I have a 3 phase motor that is currently wired to 480V, and I need to reconnect it to 240V. I previously posted this problem and got a very good response (L1 to 1, L2 to 2, L3 to 3, etc) but I need to know how I can identify the seperate wires. The wires are not marked. I can identify 1, 2, and 3 since L1, L2, and L3 are still attached. Wires 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are jumpered properly for 480V but I do not know how to individually identify these wires. Can anyone help?

Hi Gpwt I replied to you on the other request. go to Link and there is a diagram for the connections. If the wires are not id'd, mark the wires temperaroly with masking tape (use alphabit instead of numbers, use the numbers when you have the leads figured out) so you will know which ones were connected where. Then go to #1 and ohm out the lead, the one with contiuity will be #4. The other lead that was connected to #4 will be #7. Do the same for #2 and #3 then reconnect as in the diagram. Hope this helps.

John,
Thanks for the reply. I tried the web site you suggested but it did not work. Any key words I can search for? I think if I had a motor schematic I could ohm it out and figure out the lead ID's.

GPWT, unless your motor has a converter on it, 240volt wont run it. 3phase power has 3 legs of power,(L1,L2,L3) 240 volt has only 2 legs of power, each carrying 120 volts. 240 volt will leave you missing one leg of power. To run your motor, you need a 3 phase converter. the cheapest ones to buy are the Static converters.

Many shops have 240V for their 3 phase power. This is why most 3 phase motors are dual voltage and will work on either 240V or 480V, depending on how it is wired. The one in question is like this.
Our shop here runs 100 HP motors on 240V 3 Ph.
I have a VFD phase convertor to run this motor.

Have you looked extremely closely at the motor wires for tiny metal or plastic tags, or sometimes the #'s are printed right into the insulation on the wires, and the plastic may have darkened with age, making the numbers tough to read. Are ANY of the motor wires actually indentified, or are you going by L1 L2 L3 on the switch or contactor that feeds the motor?

What is the total number of leads individually accessable coming out of the motor?

What is the brand name and model number of the motor?

Yes, it is also 3 phase. Otherwise, it wouldn't work well.
