I looking to get a plasma cutter (my first), are there any good sites that compare brands and models?

What is your recommendation?

Looking to spend $1000-$1400 (of course, less is better). I would prefer one that is switchable between 120V and 240V. 1/2" or so is probably the most I would cut. Would like clean cuts on material that is about 1/4" thick.

Thanks.

Ditto on the Cutmaster 50. I even take it on site, powered by a Lincoln 250 Ranger. Just love it!

I bought myself a Thermal Dynamic's Cutmaster 50 for Christmas and have been very happy with it so far. It will clean cut 1/2" plate and cost $1,499 at our local welding supply dealer. Thermal Dynamic's and Hypertherm are owned by the same company but the machines sold under each name are different. Our welding store sells both Miller and Lincoln welders but stock only Thermal Dynamic plasma cutters.

Three Hypertherms and a MILLER. I was looking for a Miller Spectrum 625 I think it was and My welding supplier sold Me the Hypertherm 600. Both 40A output machines. Consumables are readily available & cheaper. I'm happy with it, but it sure takes a LOT of electricity. 40A @ 220V.

Friend of mine tried out three brands of cutters from his supplier. Liked the Hypertherm and bought it because of the lower cost of the consumables. Has been very pleased with it.

Ditto.

Same thing my welding instructor told me.

I have a Hypertherm 1100.

Thermal Dynamics would have been my next choice.

I recently bought a Miller Spectrum 375. It does all the things you mentioned. It is rated for a quality cut in 3/8", also rated for 1/2". I have cut 1/2" and it did a good job. You will need to have it on 220 volts for thicker materials, but will cut up to about 1/4 steel on 110 volts. Mine was on sale at my local welding supplier, sometimes you can talk them into a better price.

Hi Chris, I bought a Hypertherm 1250 about 1 1/2 years ago. When I started to research them, my local welding supply told me to stay away from ESAB, funny they sell ESAB. So I only researched Thermal Dynamics and Hypertherm. Couple reasons I went with Hypertherm, duty cycle, and how easy it was to change from hand held gun to machine torch. If you really want to learn about Plasma cutter go to Torch Mate's forum. I also have a cnc shape cutter. I can get up to 200 plunges, and 250-feet of cuts with the small nozzle, and electrode @ 40amp. These two items cost around $14.00.

Hypertherm, Lincoln, Miller. They are all good outfits. You are talking about one of their "smaler" cutters and I'd suggest your welding supplier should put you on to the right one.

I've got a Hyperterm 900, which is far bigger than your talkiing about. Bigger means faster cutting, and small means slow -very S L O W. I would be concerned that a 110v setup wouldn't have much zap at all.
