First of all, I'd like to thank all the good folks who responded to my request for diagnostic help on the little Ford that wouldn't run. Your insight helped a lot.
Now (embarassingly), I'll relate that the problem turned out to be nothing more than two fouled spark plugs, which just goes to show, that, no matter how complicated the make engines, with all the modules, sensors, computers, etc., all engines still need the basics--- air, fuel, and ignition to run.
I'm just a little put out with myself that it took me so long to diagnose what turned out to be a simple problem. Now, I'll keep an eye on the two injectors that might have contributed to the fooling problem.
TTHANKS AGAIN, EVERYONE!

Thanks for letting us know what the problem was. It is hard to diagnose an engine or any other mechanical component over the internet or telephone. I would also check the spark plug wires to the two fouled cylinders. Those old resistor wires do open up sometimes.

Thanks for the response Robert. Try using a can of Chemtrol B-12 in the fuel system to clean out any varnish in the injectors. I have found it to work better than any other fuel system cleaner. Autozone sells it if there is one near you.
