Finally broke down and bought my first parts washer from menards which is on sale for $67 bucks in the twenty gallon size. I decided to use paint thinner that is a low odor mineral spirits and cost $1.75 a gallon instead of regular mineral spirits at $3.75 or the recommended water based cleaner at $12.00 a gallon. I couldn't see buying the recommended water based cleaner not only on the cost basis, but it would probably freeze as well, and probably doesn't clean as well either. Your thoughts?

Mineral spirits can have benzene in it, check the msds sheet. Benezene amongst other things can cause leukemea. Use appropriate gloves and good ventilation.

Whats your disposal plan for the spent solvent?

I would check the flashpoint for the mineral spirits. Make sure you have a fusable link the right temperature holding the lid open. Just in case a fire starts, you want the lid to close on it's own. I use kerosene in my parts washer. That is the closest thing to Safety Clean solvent. It works very well and it won't evaporate as fast.

I use diesel fuel, because it is always handy, don't cost nothing, just draw it out of the nearest truck, and my mother n law can't stand the smell, while it will neutrilize the smell of her fancy perfume. goof

Check with your NAPA or other parts stores.Last time I changed the varsoil in our washer it was about $30.I don't know if I spelled the name right, but it is the best parts cleaner I have found and it is made specifically for parts washers.Just a thought.
