Rat Chipmunk Barrier in (cold) Machine Shed

I have a cold Machine storage shed that attracts rats, chipmunks, pack rats, ground hogs, etc. This shed is on property 30 minutes away and in the winter we are not there often enough to regularly trap these critters.

A year or so ago, I think on this forum, someone mentioned stapling mesh wiring to the splash board and then bending the wire mesh outward several feet beyond the outer wall and covering with dirt or gravel to foil entry.

Has anyone used this method? If so, then did it work? What kind of mesh wire did you use? How far beyond the wall did you extend the wire mesh?

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

I have something chewing through the chicken wire to get in my chicken pen. I've doubled and tripled the button two foot of pen with more chick wire. I think if you do like your saying and just come out a foot or so where they'll be on the wire when they try to dig in.
