My dome lights and cargo light keep coming on at odd times by themself on my 2000 F 350. It seems to happen most often when the brakes are applied. Have any of you had this problem before or know how to fix it? They go off by themselves also.

The switches for the SD Ford door lights are somewhat weak and miss-designed. Had my driver and front passenger door switchs do the same thing yours is doing. The trouble with them is the door latch cam just barely moves enough to shut the light off when new and just a little wear in the cam leaves the blinking and very soon it stays on. They can be put in at home but the first time you try to remove the door panel I would advise somebody with experience help you or get a manual. Same way with the switch, It is not terribly difficult to replace once you have done it but a PITA to do the first time, just like removing the panel. The switches are not very expensive and don't let the know it all parts man tell you there are not rights and lefts, there is a 180 degree difference in the tab that locks it in the door latch. I keep a spare switch for each side (I have 4 doors) but they came be fixed for quite a while by removing the fiber washer that is supposed to be between the switch and recess it turns into and then stretching the locking tab to pull the switch further into the latch. I stretch the tabs by laying the tab on anvil and tapping it with a punch and hammer. Its potmetal and doesnt take much.

Pull up the drivers door sillplate and check the wiring harness for breaks/corrosion. I have one that was shorting out from salt/dirt building up under there. All of the switches checked out and I didn't find the short till the smoke all leaked out of the wires. ;) HTH

Hi Todd,

Take alook at your brake controller if you have one. Some BC's are not compatable with Fords wiring scheme. A few RV guys were having this problem last year but I can't remember which BC brand. Just disconnect the wires to the BC should tell you.

Also might look at the time delay relay that does the dome lite on for 1 minute after the door is open/shut.

Our 2000 F350 did the same thing. Our local dealer charged us $150 per door to fix the problem. It is related to the door latches.

My 99 F250 did this when the door ajar switch wore out. On these trucks its inside the door and works of the door latch, so you've got to take the door panel off and get up iside there to replace it.
