A while back there was many discussions as to measuring backlash on various gearsets. The general take was that the placement of the dial indicator on say a ring gear of a differential affected the reading. The closer the dial indicator was placed to the center of the ring,(toe of the gear) the lesser the measurement for a given backlash. The other opinion was that the tooth contact surfaces were parallel from center to edge, thus placement of the indicator was not a factor. I was thinking/chatting about this for a while and promised if I found any info that I'd report back. Well now, I found out more than I could actually understand so I defer to a gear production site on-line and let the chips fall where they may. www.qtcgears.com. Regards to all, Dennis.

Hey Dennis, thanks for the link, I'll have to check that out in a few minutes. Like you said if it gets too indepth mathmatically I'll be lost myself, but there's always something new to learn, or at least try to learn. I posted a final post last time when we were discussing this, I don't know if you saw it or not. I wrote Currie Enterprises, the company that does all the aftermarket and speciality rearends, and asked them for an expert answer. Their reply was that as long as you are careful to place the dial at the same angle to the tooth on either the ID or OD, then it will always read the same on either. Take care and try to stay warm this winter. Wayne

Been setting them by feel all this time, man those dial indicator wars are the pits. Got my fingers calibrated the other day by the guy that inspects our lifts. Preload setting was a little tight but the backlash was still in tolerance.;)
