Anyone have a good recommendation, as to a solvent, for removing the baked-on, black carbon deposits around the exhaust port & in the muffler of a chainsaw?

Hi Mike,

Use Berryman B12 as it will melt the carbon before your eyes. Good stuff.

Excellent carbon remover. Wear eye protection as it may melt your eyes before the carbon.

they used to take muffler off & heat it red hot with a torch, then drop it in a bucket of cold water. Supposedly the carbon crystalizes in the cold water & can easily be scraped & chipped. Never tried it myself, always used 1/4 inch drill bit & drilled muffler with 6- 8 holes. Made it a little louder but a tank of gas lasted 3 times as long.

IF you want something to remove carbon from a chainsaw engine, you should get yourself some Mobil MX2T synthetic 2 cycle oil, or you can get some Maxima K2 synthetic oil. I'm told that they will dissolve carbon deposits in the engine, What you should do is, take out the good spark plug and put in an old junk one, then remove the muffler and fill the cylinder through the exhaust port with the MX2T or K2 oil and let it sit overnight, then in the morning take a small screwdriver and push on the piston rings to pump the oil out. You will be amazed by the amount of black carbon that comes out.
