Plasma cutter electrode and nozzle

Hey, y'all.
I've been reading about plasma cutters and I'm confused (not that this is out-of-the-ordinary.) On the types that start an arc with a HF/HV spark, does that spark go across a gap from the electrode to the nozzle to ionize the cutting gas, or does it spark from the electrode to the material being cut? What I was reading on the web seemed to indicate that the spark is from nozzle to electrode and ionizes the gas such that a current can arc from the electrode to the material being cut, thus creating the plasma. Is that right?

Hi Darren,

The Plasma arc is started from the HF unit thats sets up a pilot arc between the electrode (workpiece,(+) and the cathode(-) in the nozzle and then gas flow starts. This pilot arc sets up a ionized path for the cutting arc (ionized gas). As soon as the cutting arc is established, then HF is shut off and the cutting arc continues. The cutting arc shuts off when the ground is gone (cut is finished) or when the switch is opened shutting off gas flow.

Since were using straight polarity don't get confused from what is called the electrode (the base metal being cut) and the cathode (the tungsten). I point this difference out as that is why we can also use the Plasma arc for welding.

Ask T bone he probably knows the technicals.All I know is I hook up shop air and plug it into the wall turn it on and WOW. Way better then a torch and with a straight edge for a guide it is almost magic.
