What is the approximate cost of a 30HP Veriable frequengy drive? And how difficult are they to wire up the way you ststed below? Say if you were going to run six or eight machines off of one?

A 30 hp drive will cost between $4500.00 and $5500.00 depending on what options you get on it. You can run several smaller motors off a 30 hp drive but you would have no overload protection unless you install a motor starter to match the motor. I don't know what other problems you would have with a drive such as going off on a fault as other motors started or stopped. Also you cannot vary the speed or use electrical braking if you are running two or more motors at the same time. My .02 DH

Thank you DH. Thats kind of what I thought but I don't know enough about them. We currently run a 10HP rotary phase converter and it's been working real well for us. The cost was only $1300 and we can run up to 30Hp total but no one motor over 10hp. The converter is wired from the main box then everything goes through a three phase panel with their own breakers so they are protected this way. I'm always looking for better ways to do things but the cost up front would be prohibitive for us right now at least. Some of the other problems you mentioned would also need investigating before I tried that way. Thanks again.

That $1300 for a 10hp rotary strikes me as $1200 high, but if you're buying a commercial product was probably pretty good. Used dummy motors are cheap. I sold a 15hp rotary for $300 because I didn't need one that big and it ate too many amps. Looks to me like the changeover would be a never return on investment, although you would apparently get more work from your motors available.

I sent an e-mail to a buddy that installs the drives and PLC control systems as a side business for the latest prices. There are no electrical wholesalers in my area unless you want to items to builf a house or barn. The I squared R losses on the unbalanced motors plus the rotary convertor and harmonics. Will pay for the VFD many times over. Plus the small size and quite operattion without moving parts.
